you can trade luminous stones for diamonds

I don't think you can buy gems but even if you can it's probably better to just farm taluses

Jim Sterling, who does Jimquisition, is currently experiencing a DDoS for the crime of giving BotW a 7/10

Was a couple days ago now, site was down briefly. There are also people trying to hack his various social media accounts. It's 8.8-gate all over again.

There are a vast number of salty comments all over the internet. Mostly deranged fools who think it's some kind of personal vendetta and he's scored it low out of his (valid) beef with Nintendo corporate, or a purely contrarian action just for the attention.

The review: http://www.thejimquisition.com/the-l...e-wild-review/

I don't think he's wrong. I also cannot fathom how any professional can possibly rate it ten out of ten.

And 7 is a good score, meaning he thinks the game is good!

seems much closer to a 10 than a 7 to me but of course it's ridiculous to take any review you don't agree with personal

Yeah it's being discussed along side some of the best games ever. No way is this as low as a 7

GTA5 is also discussed as such and it is trash (qualifier is I played the prev-gen PS3 version). I gave it a 3.5/10, and one of the few thoughtful game critics Tevis Thompson gave it a 4. The vast majority of gamers and gaming critics are not an artistically intelligent bunch.

And even if BOTW is objectively amazing - if somebody gave Citizen Kane or The Godfather or No Country For Old Men a 7/10 they wouldn't catch any serious heat for it, nor should they. Do better, gamers.

7 is a pretty standard "mehhh not very good" score in the video game review world and his review was pretty negative (just look at the title for chrissakes) but uh yeah, I'm not sure why anyone would get upset really

ummm, his review took the metacritic score from a 98 down to a despicable 97.

I think any reasonable person would agree that caring that much about a review or metacritic score is silly. I mean look at the top ten, Soul Calibur for Dreamcast and Tony Hawk 2 are great games but top ten of all time? Jim's 7 doesn't take anything away from the 9s and 10s the game got either. I'll always think that putting a number score on a game is kind of pointless anyway.

With that said, Jim Sterling is not good for the games industry. My view has nothing to do with this review either. Controversy and shady practices need to be called out and talked about but when you thrive in controversy it can create a dangerous mindset. Take this review for example. Unlike the other 2 negative reviews Jim actually liked the game and explained his concerns(I don't agree with the them but that doesn't matter) yet his is the one that gets the publicity and backlash. Angry Joe, TB, boogie and so many more can talk about controversy without encouraging it. Negativity is kind of his theme.

I know, I'm just being silly.

@ el k,

I'm not sure I get what you're saying. I didn't see any reveling in controversy in Jim's article, just a thoughtful and honest review, like when, say, egoraptor panned ocarina in a sequelitis.

His review is fine and I understand his concerns even though they didn't bother me. I wrote earlier in the thread about some of the same issues. What I don't like is that he had a Jimquistition entirely based on the backlash ready to go the next day and that his content is generally focused on controversy and negativity. That's what he is most known for and even though he doesn't ask for these situations, he definitely capitalises on them. I don't think the review encouraged backlash or that he scored it a 7 because of some anti Nintendo agenda but it's naive to think he didn't expect some sort of a reaction.

A lot of the stuff he brings up in his videos is valid and should be talked about but he takes it to a level where he creates a mob mentality and I don't like that even if I agree with them. His greenlight series was pretty ****ty as well. The shady games and assets flips should be brought to attention but the times where he was calling out obvious student and amateur games was pretty much just bullying. Everyone's first game is **** but not everyone had greenlight easily accessible when they were ignorant kids. If I put my first game on greenlight and some big youtuber made a video telling me to never make games again then there's a good chance I probably wouldn't make games again. In short his content is generally focused on negativity with little balance and I don't think that's a good thing.

Have you watched the video? It was not entirely based on the reaction at all. The majority of it was commenting on how terrible the weapon durability is in his opinion. In any game, but particularly Zelda since obviously that's the catalyst for this episode, being a hugely publicised recent release featuring this mechanic. Which is not unusual - most publications will put out youtube videos shortly after or alongside their written reviews focusing on a certain aspect.

The part of the Jimquisition commenting on the fanbase reactions starts at ~10:04 out of a 13:25 video.

He also mentions reactions very briefly around 2:30 just to make it clear he still thinks Zelda is a good game despite what he's about to say, and he's not just making it up because he hates Nintendo as many claim.

No I haven't watched it and if the fanbase stuff is towards the end then I'm guessing it was a last minute addition so my bad for assuming. My opinion of him above was made up well before this Zelda review. I've followed him since the dtoid days and used to enjoy most of his content and still can at times but my point above still stands that I don't like the general negativity that he brings to the industry. I don't think there's anything sinister behind his score or the idea that he's anti Nintendo, plenty of youtubers are outspoken about Nintendo while still praising them when they do well. Also even though I love BOTW, I don't think any game is perfect for everyone. How many hardcore, Street Fighter, Dota or CS:GO players are going to rate Zelda a 10 for example.

Assuming a bell-shaped distribution of game quality, it stands to reason that any critic will have negative things to say about the vast majority of games, no?

If you dislike that he was particularly harsh to new developers, well, that's kind of been the hot thing the last 7 years or so. Don't just say "it's bad", say something shocking like "it's so unbearably awful that it caused me to miscarry while being a man".

That stuff is just Internet culture at the mo.
