Also, re: controls, they play like a standard first person shooter for PC. I'm not sure what about the controls you find wonky. Literally everything about the controls is the same as almost every FPS I've played, and certainly like every Valve game. Fallout 3 has wonkier controls than L4D, imo.
You're probably right technically speaking that more people will be playing this game in a month then are playing it now, but I would still say that this game's buzz will be quite short lived, at least in its console form.
As far as re: controls, they feel like a first person shooter from a few years ago.. before the advent of cover systems and the like. I mean, the way the characters move around and jump and aim and fire their weapons is very archaic. As far as the post above, sure this probably helps people who haven't played too many FPS games before, but I'm not that person and I'm guessing neither are you. This game doesnt seem to offer anything fresh in the way of gameplay mechanics that I would say havent been done before, or make up for the lack of depth in how the controls handle.
This game reminds me of Black for the PS2 (generic aim and fire mechanics, spray and pray), meets Gears of War Multiplayer (4 people team, recovering downed teammates etc), meets Dead Rising (Zombie enemies bov)... only the game lacks what makes all of those other games fundementally fun to play.
None of the characters seem to play any different, nor do the weapons provide much in the way of variance to how the game is played. (Pistols have unlimited ammo...COOL...
) This is exactly the kind of thing that I feel like new games coming out today shouldnt be guilty of. Give me a variety of weapons that I'm able to use in at least a couple ways, or some customization options, or atleast something new. I seriously laughed when I pulled up 'the scope' on the rifle. It looks like they spent about 10 minutes total on this weapon. The zooming in with a scope mechanic has been done a bunch of different ways in videogames over the years, and this example (a circular view surrounded by a black area) is poop. Nothing seperates it from its been done 50 times before, and its not even done very well.
Look at Gears of War for example.. they were able to come up with some genuinely fresh weapon ideas (chainsaw bayonet, grenades that you can smash into enemies, torque bow, orbital laser) and also include a new gameplay mechanic to make even standard weapons more fun to use, and allow for more depth in the game (active reload).
Based on the demo, and reading a couple reviews that have been written, it doesnt appear like the goals of the gameplay change a whole lot either.. ie, get from point a to point b. Again, I just dont see anything fresh coming from this game.
FPS are probably one of the most flooded genres in both the PC and Console world. Other then the setting in which this game takes place, which as I sort of mentioned I think was a good direction to take, and idea to start with, there isnt anything that this game does new or better then games which have been out for a year or more.
I wont spend any time or money playing this C-grade game, when there are more AAA FPS titles out there then I can shake a stick at. IMO.
