I have not played the Shining Force series yet. Doesn't the PS3 Sega Disk have part 1 as well? Shinning in the Darkness is really Shining Force I. The title was changed. The combat system in the first one is a dungeon crawler. I consider the Shining Force series to be a JRPG.

I'd have to concur, assuming they haven't played it already.

The other great thing about the Genesis collection is that it has Phantasy Star II-IV (and I think the first one but I'm not positive). Has anyone played those? I loved the first one for Sega Master System. I got around 40% into PS2 and got stuck somewhere like 11 years ago. PS2's dungeons are way more complex than any other JRPG I've played, maybe too complex.

PS1 by the way is first-person in the dungeons so you need to use graph paper, but it's fun. Ultimately those dungeons are easier than PS2's because you can't map top down dungeons as easily.

Phantasy Star 1 is on the Genesis collection for PS3 but you have to unlock it. You have to beat the first boss of Sonic 2 with 2 players. I don't get why you have to do this to unlock the 1st game. How about unlocking the 4th game rather than the 1st game?

I played RH for a few hours and got bored I guess - I haven't picked it up in months. I can't help but feel like its a poor man's Chrono Trigger.

Is there any place to find Suikoden emulators or other means of playing the game online? I'm a noob at non-SNES emulators.

So recently I played

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment and XENOGEARS

Even though I dislike Dungeon Crawlers, Persona was still pretty solid, I played 3 and lovd it and think 2 is good. I know its repetitive and like ost SMT games, dungeon crawlish but the story is really solid and I like the Plot/Setting in the City. I took a break because I wasn't getting the right personas and anyone whos played the game knows that you will need the most updated fusions to even make a boss fight semi-difficult.

picked up XENOGEARS again, I am in disc 2 and have to prolly do the toughest duop fight ever, I wont spoil anythign and am loving the Story obv. Even disc 2 ! and anyone whos played Xenogears will tell you how they either Enjoyed/ ****ing hated disc 2

Also picked up ToG F which I will play in the next 2 weeks

I've been playing tales of Graces F for the ps3 the past couple days.

Overall: good so far, might be better than Vesperia but I hold Abyss on a pedestal.

Im around 30hrs in and it seems n a matter of hours I will finish the main quest. I ll post a review once im done

A while back I started playing Shining in the Darkness on the Sega PS3 collection. I'm using graph paper to map it out, which is necessary since the dungeon is first-person. It was fun, but unfortunately I haven't gone back to it in months.

Bump.

Any suggestions for a JRPG for me?

I've never hugely got into JRPG's but have an urge to. I've got a vita and am replaying FF 7-9, played them back in the day on Ps1 but never finished, FF7 was my first ever JRPG and I just got owned by Weapon, I didn't really know I needed to grind and hadn't found any of the additional characters.

Have also played some pokemon games but I hate how some pokemon you basically have to look at a guide to find. I want something I can fnish on my own, and then look for secrets after if I want, not where you need to google stuff to get key items.

Here's my criteria. I have a Vita, 3DS and an android phone that can run emulators + a controller (also have a ps3 and wii but want something portable).

I am already replaying ff7 and have ff5,6,8 and 9 on vita ready to replay. I also have chrono trigger on android ready to play.

I intend to get Persona 4 golden when it's released in europe.

I'm tempted by Disgaea 3, but I've heard the combat is super detailed and complex. Would I find this too hard?

Any other suggestions? I presume there's no need to play anything in order, as stories aren't related even though the games are often numbered?

Golden Sun 1 & 2. Unfortunately you will need DS Lite or older to play them since they are GBA games. Still, by far my favorite jrpgs since they require less grinding and have innovative use of "magic" (you need to magic outside battles too in clear the puzzles. And then there are a lot of things you CAN do with magic but don't need to (mind reading for example, you can get some hints to find stuff).

Disgaea isn't "hard," it just takes some time to understand the mechanics because there are a lot of things that aren't traditional. Not only can you level your character, you also can level your weapons in the Item World (which I wouldn't bother with until post-game). Only the character who kills an enemy gets experience and "mana" (which is basically the currency for upgrading characters and other stuff).

The thing about Disgaea games is that the normal game is only just part of the game. The post-game gives easily over 100 hours of extra content. But it takes a lot of grinding to do all the post-game stuff.

If you're going to get a PS3 Disgaea I'd recommend 4 instead of 3. I think 3 has the better story but 4 has the better mechanics.

If you have the option to play the first game (called Hour of Darkness for the PS3 I think), I'd try that instead. It has the best story and is the most "simple" game mechanically. Every game after the first one adds more and more bells and whistles.

Haven't played Golden, but Persona 4 is an excellent game. Top 5 JRPG easy.

Final Fantasy sale on PSN at the moment. Nearly finished FF7, I must have really sucked at RPGs when I first played it.

In the U.S.? Are you sure you're not looking at a news report from like a year ago when the games actually were on sale? There's a big PSN sale starting later today (13 for '13) but none of the announced 13 are FF games.

Edit: There is a FF sale in Europe.

got Ni No Kuni yesterday, pretty fun so far, like 5 hours in. music is A++ (all orchestrated by Tokyo Philharmonic, composed by Joe Hisaishi of Studio Ghibli) and the Ghibli animation and storytelling adds a ton of flavor. kind of feels like Alice's Adventures in Wonderland/Spirited Away. looks like this is going to be an epic, nostalgic adventure.

Several Final Fantasy titles, as well as Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana are available on the iPhone. I haven't played most of them myself, but I hear the controls are generally subpar compared to using a controller. Still, not a bad option if you don't own an SNES or whatever.
