Disgaea isn't "hard," it just takes some time to understand the mechanics because there are a lot of things that aren't traditional. Not only can you level your character, you also can level your weapons in the Item World (which I wouldn't bother with until post-game). Only the character who kills an enemy gets experience and "mana" (which is basically the currency for upgrading characters and other stuff).
The thing about Disgaea games is that the normal game is only just part of the game. The post-game gives easily over 100 hours of extra content. But it takes a lot of grinding to do all the post-game stuff.
If you're going to get a PS3 Disgaea I'd recommend 4 instead of 3. I think 3 has the better story but 4 has the better mechanics.
If you have the option to play the first game (called Hour of Darkness for the PS3 I think), I'd try that instead. It has the best story and is the most "simple" game mechanically. Every game after the first one adds more and more bells and whistles.
