Suikoden III is interesting. Its by far the longest of the 5. I personally really enjoyed it and find it better than the 4th. The storyline in it is different and is epic for that.

I'm currently debating whether I should get Tales of Vesperia or Lost Odyssey for the xbox. I played the Tales demo and thought the combat was nice but I can't beat the ****in demo's boss. I'm probably missing something since I've never played a Tales game. I've seen videos of Lost Odyseey's gameplay and it seems like a final fantasy type turn based game which I'm used to so am leaning towards that one. Any advice appreciated

I've only played the "mainstream" JRPGs like final fantasy, tales of vesparia and pokemon...

I've said it a few times on this forum for me story>gameplay, I think JRPGs suit me well.
FFXIII is my favorite game of all time. followed by the fallout series

Gameplay is actually my least important factor. I love games like Alan wake where the gameplay is pretty bad but has an interesting story, or the first half of ffxiii being just a movie where you have to mash a button every now and again, i don't mind that one bit.

(the only genre this is not true for me is fighting games, although mortal kombat has a way better story, the gameplay of street fighter is unmatching)

Lost Odyssey and it's really not even close.

Sounds like 360 is the way to go. FFXIII is on both consoles, but LO is only on the 360, right?

Golden Sun 1 & 2 are my favorites by far. I really recommend anyone who likes JPRPGs to try the out. They have bit more puzzle solving than your average RPG, but it is all about using the different Psynergy (magic) skills to pass. Both games are for Gameboy Advance, which you should get dirt cheap these days. Nintendo DS plays them as well.

To Bluegrassplayer, you know you can turn on the subtitles for Dragon Age, right?

I did not realize that, and I just beat the game

as I said I enjoyed II really liked IV and loved, LOVED V. I played suikoden III long time ago for about 5hrs but never got into it. i am hoping the storyline is solid becuase I remember the battels feeling awkward with 6 people but only 3 groups.

Really like sakaguchi(sp?) but ToV was really solid. LO was also good, but eh gameplay is slow and and the story actually isn't too complex/deep. There are better turn based games out there if you have a ps2. I would easily say TOV > LO and I am not a big fan of Arpg(unless its the tales of series)

I am sure you have played your fair share of JRPGS but if not and have a ps2. there are tons of games out there for you. most notable the Xeno series.

yeah I believe mistwalker was intended for a 360 approach only.

I found a copy of Breath of Fire 3 for PSP last week and its pretty sweet! I totally forgot about the early masters you can pick up and have just picked up Bunyan and Mygas at lvl 15

love that game. The masters really don't add that much, you haven't missed out on too much.

I read that giving Mygas to Ryu early is supposed to give you a reasoable boost to AP to stay in dragon mode longer. As it is now I can only be a dragon for 3-4 turns which is enough but F that! I want moar dragon mode!!

In every game.
This is one of the things that emulation is really good at. My brother has played through tons of the older JRPGs this way where you can speed up a lot of the boring stuff and I imagine it's a lot better experience.

A completely non-linear game can't have the same emotional poll as a linear game can. I don't see how you can compare the two at all.
I should try not to use the word "linear", because ultimately almost all games are linear (depending on how we're defining it). In games like GTA you can sometimes choose between a few different missions, but in the end you're doing all of them at some point and the game is not going to change based on what you did first.

I reject the premise that to have "emotional pull" you need to have set characters doing things in non-interactive scenes. That's stuck in a movie/book mindset. (I also reject the premise that "emotional pull" is what art is supposed to strive for, but I'll stick with that for now). Having a 10 minute long cutscene in which a character dies and it's sad, all of it out of your control, is not utilizing the medium properly. It's obviously the norm for now, but hopefully will not be forever.

Going with the emotion angle, games have the opportunity to have you personally involved. For example, games that allow you to cultivate relationships, force you to make tough choices, etc. BioShock tried to do this but mostly failed in my opinion. They should have made things significantly more difficult for you if you were going to do "the right thing" and save the little girls, for starters.

Anyway this is discussion for a more general theory thread. Hopefully my point is clear that JRPGs try to evoke emotion by showing (and they do this more egregiously than most genres), whereas I believe that games should attempt that by having you "do".

I still have enjoyed many JRPGs in the past, and will probably play games such as Vagrant Story and FF IX for the first time if they ever go free on Playstation Plus.

Partly because the market for what I like is small, and even though I think it will explode eventually, that doesn't put money on the table (especially for conservative players like EA, who control most big game budgets).

But there are millions of people who want to pay $60 for a rigid story told in video game format. They have alternatives, and instead they choose these games. That seems like pretty strong evidence the games provide something of value (actually I know they do because I like JRPGs, but let's stay objective).

When modern cinematic techniques were invented, the market for filmed stage plays dried up in favor of real films. If new games are produced that "better" than traditional JRPGs in a similar way, the same thing will presumably happen to the market for traditional JRPGs. But so long as there's a strong market, these games are clearly "justified" by the fact people want to play them.
Agree with all of this.

I need to get my hands on Tales of Vesperia and Eternal Sonata after I finish FFXIII which I'm finding very boring right now.

When I think of RPG's I think Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy IV, VI, VII. If you haven't played these.... do it. I replayed FF VI a couple months ago and still absolutely love it. Hands down the most interesting and enjoyable/expressive characters across all Final Fantasy games.

But even still, I think of all of those games as Americanized RPG's. If you want a really long JRPG quest with epic cut scenes you want Star Ocean or Dragon Quest. I'm not really sure on the figures but I would imagine that Dragon Quest VIII and Star Ocean: The Last Hope have got to be two of the longest JRPGs ever made if you want 100% completion.

Breath of Fire 3 was the game I can remember having the most fun playing. It's a shame I can't find the PS copy for less than $100.

That goes for 100? I'm positive thats sitting in my parents garage right now. Is that the one where you start off as a kid then go onto adolescence and your best friend is like a tiger?

BoF 3 is rare. should go bury those ps1 games like Grandia and the such and either sell them or wait to sell them in years

Thats because it's not really a JRPG and it's an impossible game if your anything less then the most patient person in the world.

I had a lot of fun with BoF3. It's the only BoF I've played, how does it compare to the others?

Another game is Star Ocean 2. Again, only one of the series I've played.

I really want to replay Chrono Cross along with those 2. Never played the Suikoden or Xeno series. Man, the PS1 was so awesome. That was me in middle school. I'd replay all the **** in a second if I had time. They need to start releasing more stuff in the playstation store. I don't know anything about how difficult it is to do that.

I couldn't really get into FFXIII but I just got back into playing games when I started playing so I think it was a little overwhelming.
