This is what I figured, but I didn't know if some MAME genius had offloaded some processing to the GPU.

most games will just fine on a 2GHz system. Actually most use significantly less than that. I'm using a GeForce from the 7000 series in the one I built. You don't need much video card at all - just make sure it has the outputs for whatever type of monitor you want to use.

Dear Quadstriker,

What game have you been playing the most / most obsessed with since completing the machine?

From my most played games list it seems that Street Fighter Alpha 3 is the top of the list. That and Tapper are probably my two favorites right now.

The number of times I ever played SFA3 before making this machine? Zero. Kinda funny. I wonder what other gems await that I've never played before.

Edit: A somewhat uninspired side scrolling shooter, but it's not without it's charm. The music is good, but repetitive. The controls are fairly smooth. I dislike the way the stages are simply wraparound scrollers. Who teddy boy is, why he has the blues, who these blue guys are chasing me, and in general what in the holy **** is going on in this game still elude me.

lol

If you don't like crazy old-school Japanese games don't bother. But it's seriously addictive and seriously difficult once you get past the first couple levels.

Is this the SNES version or does an arcade version exist? Used to play the SNES title a lot, but was always annoyed that the boss planes were insanely large.

Nice. I'd only played the SNES port. Our arcades were pretty lousy growing up and we never got it. I suspected your list was arcade only, but I thought you might have had a common front end for MAME+emus like quadstriker had installed.

I like looking at other peoples' most played list because it gives me a chance to try out a game I'd otherwise breeze right past in a list. Here's mine.

1. Street Fighter Alpha 3
2. Marble Madness <---I've played this more than I thought
3. Arkanoid
4. Pirates! Gold (Sega Genesis)
5. Dusty Diamond's All-Star Softball (NES)
6. SNK vs. Capcom SVC Chaos
7. Tapper

#s 2 and 3 are obviously functions of me having a trackball.

Arkanoid isn't a trackball game

Hey, I actually have Arkanoid in a home made bar-top cabinet (I didn't make it). I haven't had it plugged in in ages. It's a little flaky (the fire buttons actually don't work and I've never bothered to mess with it) but I think I paid like $30 for it or something (this photo is dated 2001):

Yeah, it looks like crap. I was supposed to refurb it and turn it into something nice. Yet another project that never got done...

Well it is for me dammit!

The only thing that looks salvageable from that is the spinner, which is probably the best part anyway.

It's buried in my basement somewhere. I should go dig it out. The "cabinet" is masonite (etc) counter top looks like hell. If I was just going to strip it for parts, the PCB >>> the spinner. (Meh, looking at eBay you might be right).

Hey, here's another one, looks pretty similar

Ouch, that one weighs about 100 pounds. I guess the cabinet is pretty heavy duty.

100 pounds? Yeesh. That's crazy.

Hey, someone's kitchen counter top was sacrificed to make that thing

I don't think mine's a hundred pounds but it's pretty hefty. Easily more than 50.

Wow, the skinny base makes it look super long front to back. That would look wicked next to your power tools in the garage The only thing I'm not crazy about is how the tankstick sits on the deck.

The sickest thing is that there is a lathe in the picture. I wonder if it's a bone of contention with the roommate(s).
