Pictures of the stripes. The top stripes are complete. The bottom stripes still have the masking tape in place. Try as we might we couldn't prevent a very small amount of paint bleeding when we did the top ones. Touch up black paint fixed it. A spade design is going to go in the middle.

Bonus shot of the messy work space.

Girlfriend was busy today! Here's a picture of the stencil she created for the side designs. She's holding it in place and hiding because "I don't want to be on Boyforum."

Man Quad. This is so sick. Been following this thread for a while now and I think you and your girlfriend have done some amazing work. Can't wait to see the finished paintwork and the working console.

Not sure if this is a brag, beat, or variance, but I have probably beaten that game a half dozen times. My Grandma had it for the Genesis, and when I visited her for a week every summer, it would eventually get played and beaten, along with Sonic 1, Flashback, Pac-man, Bonanza Bros, and a Chester Cheatah game. Good Times.

Painting that spade design can be summed up in one word: Painstaking. Once again, everything takes 3 times longer than I think it's going to take.

But it's totally going to be worth it. It's difficult to explain, but laying the coats of latex paint on is giving the design almost a 3d gold leaf effect. It's going to be totally sick and I hope that when all is done, some pictures will do the design work justice.

So yeah, it takes a long time to layer this paint and stuff. Here's what Girlfriend had to say regarding the length of time the design is taking:

"Remember when the pope was talking to Michaelangelo..."

at this point I was thinking 'oh yes of course the pope how could I forget of course'.

"Remember when the pope was talking to Michaelangelo and he was all 'When will it be finished?' and Mike was all 'When it's finished!' yeah that's what this arcade is like."

She just went all papal on my ass.

This is exciting stuff man!

If you don't mind.. at the end of this project, would you be against detailing out your costs? It might help the rest of us who are all imagining when in the next year we're gonna do this ourself?

Thanks again, great read, fun to follow as well!

Did you point out that Michaelangelo probably didn't use stencils?

Thanks a lot. I really do appreciate it.

On machines like this, can you literally play any Arcade game, such as Golden Tee, etc? (not trying to get into the where do I get it discussion, just not familiar with the MAME program).

Cliff notes of the wiki: There are over 4000 games that work with MAME right now, most of them from the year 2000 and back.

Just a quick picture to show how the design is coming along. the yellow part of the inner design is mirrored on the opposite side, and then there's a layer of black accents that is going to go on as well. Then of course touching it up and making it look perfect blah blah blah. I have no say in this part.

Today is Girlfriend's birthday, so probably no work on it today.

Edit: Yes the same spade will appear on both sides of the cabinet. We've got pretty much the same amount completed on both sides.

Where we stand:

Here's what it looks like when it's painted.

A close up

Not pictured is Girlfriend, who currently is making the other side look just as good. It's almost done - that is to say to me it sure as hell looks done, but she's "touching it up", a process that never seems to have a conclusion.

Assuming the touch up process on the other side meets GF's approval tonight, I'll hit it a few times with a clear coat spray to seal the deal. Then tomorrow I'll put on the new T-molding on the edges.

Oh, and on the MAME equipment this week, I busted out the Michael Jackson Moonwalker game. There's something to be said for a game where your two buttons are "Fire" and "Dance".

Nice. Everything is looking good. Great call on MJ moonwalker, I forgot about the arcade version, just remembered the Genesis one.
