I think Flex has a pretty good distribution of heroes and seems to be a lot of heroes that are always at least somewhat relevant to the meta. Unfortunately it also comes with the really frill heroes like Abathur, TLV and stuff, but some people might like that.

Tanks & Bruisers seems like a decently valued pack as well, but then you're getting an entire pack of Melee.

Assassin pack is obviously decent if you want to just be DD, but having nothing but assassins would make draft a ***** since they are almost always the first to go.

If you got any loot boxes, roll them all out first. If you plan on buying any, do so first. Boxes can contain heroes in them. Not often, but if you have 20-30 boxes from returning to open you will probably get least 1 or 2 heroes from that. Then you pick a pack after that which will get you the best value.

There is also a spreadsheet that was going around where you tell it what heroes you own and it tells you what pack to take based purely on # heroes or gold value of the pack. I could try and dig it up again if you're interested, but probably google-able.

I opened like 30 packs of stuff and the only heroes were ones I already have.

somehow my previous hotkeys had to be reset and the default seems WOAT. so now have to adjust that all over again

I really like D.Va in HotS. I was balking at getting her, then realized I had 1100 gems in my account (I have no idea how I got them, since I didn't buy them). I'm not sure how good she is in the hands of an experienced tanker. But I "got" her immediately in a way that simply isn't true for most other tanks. Got my first ever MVP with her and even had some of my teammates commenting about how well I play (that's definitely a first for me, as I'm usually pretty bad at this game).

In early levels, she's squishy and doesn't do a lot of damage. But pilot mode makes dying not as big a deal if you can get away, because you can get your Meka back relatively quickly against minions. Her meka ult (bunny hop) seems really useful in team fights. And you can make the enemy team scatter quickly with "nerf this".

its unclear how good she is right now, but likely a good hero

You get 1000 gems for level 5 I think? And 100 to buy one of the mega bundles.

So my level is now 96, up from like 30 pre-patch. I have no idea if this is good or bad. Is 96 good or bad?

Your level is just the sum of all hero levels. It's neither good nor bad. Play different heroes during free rotations and level up more.

What's the best site to get builds for the various heroes? I've used Icy Veins, but some people seem to think that site isn't any good and I'm wondering what's better.

It's a statistics only site and doesn't explain builds, but hotslogs.com is generally where I go to quickly look up what the popular builds are, as well get a quick glance of what heroes are performing well in the current patch.

IcyVeins guide authors are pretty good about keeping up with patch changes and whatnot, but it's just impossible to expect every guide to be up to date all the time. And you need to keep in mind that every guide is really just 1 person's thoughts on how to play a hero, (albeit, always a very high level player).

If you're looking for a quick look at how to build a hero you haven't played before, I like just sticking to stats. If you are looking to master a hero, probably read both.

Is the QM/unranked map pool the same as ladder? I want to play Dragon Shire and Blackheart's Bay but they're not in the map pool.

The map rotation is the same for ranked and unranked modes. I don't agree with it (actually I really dislike it), but Blizzard said it's going to be that way, so that's what we have to deal with.

If they're doing rotations on the maps that is indeed idiotic. I can't think of a single good reason to do that. I was sick of that one where you have to go underground and collect skulls after the 2nd time playing it, and I saw it over and over again this weekend.

Maybe if enough people complain they'll change it

I assume xp is awarded like it is in Hearthstone, where you get more the longer the game runs as opposed to getting more for being more awesome.

I played a previously-unheard-of 50 minute game vs AI last night. it was that map where you have to gather the nukes and then nuke stuff. All the buildings for both teams except the cores were gone, neither side could push through (my idiot AI teammates were idiots and wouldn't ****ing attack the core for some reason). I didn't do anything special in the game, died a lot, etc. It finally ended when I followed two sets of mercs into their base and finally took the core down. It was rather frustrating.

Anyway I got almost 187k xp for that game, I was 2/3 of the way between level 4 and 5 when I started and I was sure I would have to play 2 more games to get to 5 but that xp total shot me into level 5 easily. The only reason I can think of for me to have gotten that much XP is because the game ran that long. Hell I wasn't even MVP.

They actually just changed the map rotations on the PTR. Only ranked will have the new rotation, whereas UD/QM/AI will have all of the maps available.

The experience you gain post-game is based on the experience your team earns in-game. Then any bonuses and multipliers are added on after (like stimpack, party bonus, first win of the day, win bonus, ranked bonus, etc). It's for this reason that you gain a lot less exp in losing games. It's not just that you miss out on the 50k for winning, but also the losing team tends to be down in levels, sometimes with a 3-4 level deficit.

Hmm interesting, I love learning about how stuff is calculated behind the scenes. I just assumed it was game length = xp! since that's pretty much what I was told wrt HS (actually is number of cards played but that roughly corresponds to game length in most cases). In HS you get more xp for a game going to fatigue and you losing than for your opponent to concede to you on turn 4, and that's even factoring in the fact that you get "bonus" xp for winning the game, which it appears is the same for HotS.

Well, you gain more experience in a 50 minute game than you would in a 15 minute game, so it seems to be the same thing.

The Mega bundles are put on ice, and may not return.
The map rotation has 9/13 maps, not sure for how long, and there is some rumour that it will be or is all maps at bots games and QM, or so, or something else, but I haven't seen it yet.
250 to 400 total level is pretty much a ready player. The level depends on stimpack amount (and on how many heroes you level up to at least lvl 5), that one probably should buy to level the heroes faster, getting cosmetics and heroes faster. But one may needs to have the time to play then, and leveling new heroes levels faster, getting more loot boxes and as so more cosmetics and shards.

I just finished a 30-40 day stimpack (that I got for free, but they can be bought with gems) and got about 150 levels more, plus I got many new heroes with the Mega bundle (I bought the assassins for my EU account, much as they are most often played, and the other bundles for other regions, for testing purposes, not needing to wait the free rotation). I also bought many more heroes with gold (that I got enough), and leveled them up also.

The Welcome bundle gives a 7 day stimpack, and 800 gems, for 5 euros, and total level of 10 gives some more stimpack, and with luck a loot box can contain more stimpack. Total level of 4 (in Asian region at least) gave me 1k gems, like same in Americas region.

The missing gold makes it difficult to run the loot boxes again -- if it contains absolutely nothing useful. The daily quests won't keep up with the gold needs, that you need to buy the heroes also -- for leveling purposes; or you can buy heroes with gems, but that won't all cut it w/o real money (to buy gems).

So, it all doesn't quite add up before one has the gold/heroes and is ready to level up heroes with a Stimpack. But one levels the 1st 3 to 5 levels pretty fast, while higher it takes something like 24 games, or 12 games with a Stimpack, per leveling. And average game last about 20 minutes, or the bot games might be faster (humans vs. bots).

Tassadar is again back to being strong (after the 1st 5 minutes or so). Hotslogs.com has the percentage. When it was nerfed, it dropped all the way down to about 43%, and is at about 48% at this time.

With a stim pack you average around 180k xp per game (eyeballing it) and levels increase gradually until maxing out at 1.2M XP at level 12 I think, so it's not really 24 games.
