Re: GTA V Trailer - November 2nd, 2011

again, if your main interest is the storyline in GTA then you're doing it wrong. That is not the focus of a GTA game.

---

it's released in september, i really don't think they'll be any more push backs.

Re: GTA V Trailer - November 2nd, 2011

One of my favorite things to do in GTAVC and GTAIV was to jump on a bike and snag as many hidden packages/kill pigeons as I could in each section just so I could listen to the holy **** out of the radio stations. I'm hoping they do some sort of ipod'ish type of thing with your phone so I can spend hours and hours underwater just doing misc stuff. The radio stations are one thing they've never gotten wrong. Especially the talk-radio stations and commercials.

Lazlow and Fernando Martinez are the GOAT radio host/guests of all time.

I'm gonna have to dig out Vice City again now.

I had a Spanish customer yesterday who reminded me of Fernando Martinez. When I said something would take a few minutes he said "That is okay. Take your time. There is no rush." in the Fernando voice.

Lazlows interview with pimp Fernando in GTA3 was the best thing ever - I can't explain how awesome I thought it was when I found he had his own station in VC

"You see Lazlow, you see? I remember Jerry so well. He come in, he is like a broken man. But a half a man... a 'ma' if you will - he has no 'n' anymore."

We really don't tho. Look at post #417 and his take on R*'s ability to tell a story. That's a pretty fundamental disagreement between us I'd think.

Quote:
but this is the post of yours that tilted me the most:
You've been pretty consistent that BJ was "wrong" and or "messing with you" by, apparently, saying a bunch of **** you agreed with.

I mean, if you've scaled back your point to "I don't care about the stories", that's cool. Some people do, though, and I don't think you can call them "wrong".
He's not "wrong" any more than someone that is a fan of the Miami Heat are "wrong". It's all subjective.

That said, I still hold he's expecting too much from a GTA story. If someone wants to pick up GTA under the assumption they'll be told a great story, more power to them, but that's basically just counting down the minutes until they run back here to post "This story blows, wtf Rockstar!!!".

No GTA game has had a great story. They've been servicable, and a nice way to put you into the world of GTA, but none have been what I would describe as riveting.

GTA3-No story beyond "You got betrayed, work for random bad guys until you can get revenge"
GTA:VC-Remember Scarface? Yeah, do that
GTA:SA-Remember every movie where an insignificant person gets caught up in something bigger and ends up making something of himself? Yep, that.

GTA4-Please don't make me talk about this.

Quote:
Rockstar has steadily increased the narrative elements of their games. GTA 1/2 barely had a story, GTA 3 was a loosely connected bunch of subplots, all the way up to GTA 4's expansive meditations on revenge and the American dream and ****.
I disagree pretty heavily with this. I mean, I suppose I agree with your concept, but really, GTA3-GTA:SA had a similar sort of story telling and GTA4 just went off the reservation with it. That why, to me, it was such a drastic departure that I don't bother counting it when I think of "GTA" games. GTA games are light-hearted with almost cartoonish violence and dark humor. GTA4 was just dark.

Quote:
So,

Are you sincerely confused about that? Like, you can't even comprehend the possible existence of someone who cares about the story of a videogame that has hours and hours of cutscenes and dialogue?
Yeah, I am.

No, I'm not shocked that some people play video games for their stories, that's obvious. And there have been some amazing video game stories made. Some people hate it, but Metal Gear Solid games tell a solid story (assuming you don't hate nanomachines ). One of my top 10 games of all time, Grim Fandango, tells a fantastic story. What is probably the best game of all time, Portal, is the king of immersion in story-telling.

Those are the games I would expect to hear someone get and then say "Meh, the story in this one really let me down". If you're buying a GTA game and expecting a riveting story and not the ability to scuba dive, steal a plane and the parachute out of it, rob a bank, and sleep with and then kill a hooker, then I feel like maybe you're looking for the wrong strong points in GTA games.

Buddy made a CD (or 3) of the entire Chatterbox playlist from GTA3. Amazing for a road trip.

Re: GTA V Trailer - November 2nd, 2011

i watched a vid on youtube of a company who went to see some gamepaly of GTA 5, Fergie "Glamorous" was on 1 radio station, Warren G "Regulate" also was heard.

Also when you're not in a vehicle, there is background sound, not just the gameplay sounds but sort of accompanying music for different events.

Fernando Martinez's Emotion 98.3 CD has been in my car's CD changer under number "4" for over 3 years now. I actually have a pretty awesome story regarding listening to the VC soundtrack while driving through Miami and the Keys.

I'll always remember my cousin telling me on Christmas Eve 2004 that he kept the country station on the entire day while playing San Andreas because of how great Amos Moses is.

I do not play video games for the stories. Even with the "story-heavy" (note the quotes) genres such as adventure games and RPGs, I don't play for the stories and if anything the stories get in the way.

Portal is I agree one of the best games ever made (top 3 or so I'd say). I'm not positive how you meant the comment about people saying "the story really let me down". Do you mean that many idiots consider Portal to have a disappointing bare bones story that should have been fleshed out more? If so, I agree with your disagreement with those people. Portal is a story in video game form done correctly, with a narrative revealed to you through environment, exploration and gameplay rather than through dialogue and cut-scenes. Portal 2 was a step in the wrong direction, trying to be more like a movie (a mediocre one) and less like a game.

GTA3 and VC's stories are just silliness to give you an excuse to play, while at the same time delivering some short entertaining cut-scenes often involving recognizable voice actors. I'm fine with that. I much prefer it that way than the GTA4 way where Rockstar is trying hard to do Art (the irony is that when games try to be Art by adding film-like narrative elements, they in fact move further away from what can actually make games Art).

Where you and I differ is that I can't just give Rockstar a pass and ignore the boring story **** that takes away from the fun. When all is said and done it may not matter, as I've said about RDR. But it's still an unfortunate issue that takes away from the experience, and it would be a better game if they went back to having crazy cut-scenes about fapping to Margaret Thatcher with Robert Loggia and Ray Liotta doing voices. There is that ludonarrative dissonance thing too.

Vice city had the best soundtrack and radio stations of all time. That was reason enough to buy the game. Seriously. GOAT in that department.

SA is a very very close 2nd in that regard. The talk radio wasn't as good but the grunge/rap stations were exceptional.

Emotion, Flash FM and Wave were all the nuts, Vice City's soundtrack is a testament to how good 80s music was. Also, I love Fernando as a DJ.
