analyzing GTA and looking mostly at its script/storyline is just the wrong way to look at GTA. Honestly, if you didnt like the trailers because of the scripting then you should stick to watching sit-coms where it actually matters.
I don't think people realise just what rockstar are trying to accomplish with GTA 5, 3 protaginists alone makes it 3x as large on the storyline/scripting aspect and on top of that the characters have to be brought together.
as for the game only going in one direction, if you'd have bothered to keep up with GTA updates, rockstar have been aiming at stepping away from this since day 1. 3 protaginists alone should aid this massively.
fwiw, i never bought gta 4, i played it a little and was very unimpressed so baltimore jones might be on the ball wrt gta 4 critiscisms but watching the trailers and worrying about scripting/storyline is just doing it wrong. The approach rockstar takes to writing the scripts/storyling suits GTA as a game.
edit:
i lol'd at this

They're too enamored with what they perceive as their brilliant filmmaking ability. They want to strictly control how things play out, which goes against the entire spirit of the series.
again, perhaps its ur view of GTA 4, but none of the previous GTA's did this imo. there needs to be a flow to the game, leaving every single decisions up to the player would be a mistake.
