Yeah sure. For reference I didn't play any of the PS2/3 GoW games, but I did get the God of War 3 Remastered on PS4 back when it came out (2015?) and played through most of it. Thought it was OK, was glad to have checked it out but not one of my favourites by any means. I didn't complete it, and this week in preparation for the new one I loaded it up again to maybe finish it off - turns out I had about 11 hours played, and from a youtube walkthrough I'm about 2-3 hours from completion. I played it for maybe 30 minutes and couldn't really be bothered. Watched the "Story of God of War in 7 minutes" by IGN instead for a recap, which while worthwhile considering how short it is isn't required at all - this is a new story in a different setting. It is enough to know Kratos is a demigod, son of Zeus and a human (I think) - and in the previous games was a rage filled monster and brutally killed almost all gods of Greek legend.
So now, some unknown time later he's older. Has a big beard and son, and has moved to Norway or wherever Norse mythology takes place instead of Olympus. Norse mythology - Thor & Mjolnir, Odin etc is awesome!
First off, the presentation - GoW was always visually very impressive, but this is on another level. It's perhaps one of the best looking games ever... add a PS4 Pro and it can almost manage 60fps in 1080p or the normal 30fps in 4K and it looks insane. The animation / performance capture work is superb. Easily up there with Uncharted 4, which is likely the previous high water mark. Every movement just looks so incredibly natural. The sound is also very impressive. Teal'c from Stargate SG1 (Christopher Judge) is the new voice of Kratos, and he's perfect. Great orchestral music. Thunderous bass when appropriate. It's all very impressive.
Then, there's the new combat style. GoW3 remaster was basically a button-masher (sorry if this causes offense to fans). It never felt particularly tactical. Also, a QTE-fest. A product of it's timers, perhaps - and yeah kinda fun, but not exactly popular in 2018. This is not like that. But it sorta does respect the heritage! New style is like an amazing mixture of Dark Souls / Nioh light/heavy/evade/roll/shield/parry + the old formula, with some DOOM 2016 mixed in there also lol. It is visceral, tactical and (if you so choose) hard! A lot is to do with the close camera and the aforementioned amazing animation and sound, but every move feels weighty and full of power. Plus your new weapon is basically Mjolnir in axe form, it's very cool throwing and recalling it as you wish. It's a bit early for me to say but it seems like there will be a lot of depth in the various combat upgrade trees / unlockable moves / gear.
It's a large game - probably of similar size to Horizon Zero Dawn, but it's not quite "open world", much more of a tight narrative. There is plenty of exploration though and supposedly many great storylines / areas are hidden off the main quest path. It's possible some would consider it open world, I haven't got very far but it did just appear to open up quite a lot. At a minimum, the world should be considered "interconnected" kinda like Bloodborne. The hardest difficulty "Give me God of War" is said to be almost a "New Game+" - remixed enemies with new move sets and locations, but not quite since it's starting over rather than continuing with your previous gear / unlocks.
That's probably enough gushing lol.
