Meridian 59

Not my first online game, but probably the first online game I sold my soul to.

Special mention goes to Gemstone III on AOL because that was back when we had to make a long distance call to connect to the internet and I managed to run up over $1000 long distance charges in 1 month when I was like 11. Yeah. That only happened once.

Yeah, as a kid at the time it was really cool. I remember playing Madden on it. That's it. It was cool...till the first phone bill came and it was like $700 because it dialed directly to a long distance number. Didn't go over so well with the parents.

Natural Selection. The original was one of the funnest games I ever played competitively.

Then played WoW, and WoW became life.

Making maps for Doom and Marathon from Bungie (but not really any multiplayer) then Diablo, Warcraft 2, and Quake casually multi, then pretty competitive with Myth: The Fallen Lords (also from Bungie).

Diablo -> Counterstrike -> Team Fortress Classic -> Diablo 2 -> WoW -> COD: Modern Warfare -> Team Fortress 2 -> Diablo 3.

Since D3 I don't think there has been a multiplayer game I've sunk hundreds of hours into.

MechCommander. Had a great community as it was all done through a lobby system via some old software where you could chat, to play you set up a room with whoever was going to be in the game and launched it from there. Meant everyone knew everyone to some degree, played it for a couple years before the numbers eventually dwindled from a couple thousand to a few hundred and then fewer.

I've played probably <20 hours of PoE, maybe 3 of Rocket League.

I've played hundreds of hours of Eu3 & Eu4 but the vast majority in singleplayer.

Tibia

Not looked it up for years and can't believe it's still going. Sadly my account seems to have gone though.

I think the stress of having another player attack me on that game have lead to my anxiety issues in later life...

I think it was probably Doom II for me. It wasn't truly "online" yet, as the only places that had high speed internet were pretty much college campuses and you had to figure out how to download and install an add-on to play a crappy online game, but my first year in college, my friends and I discovered a) Doom II and b) that you could play on the dorm LAN.

I remember the alpha nerd of my hall, the kind of guy who wore kimonos around the dorm, had a ratty mustache, and was offended if you didn't know computers, had the game and installed it on everyone's PC (I say everyone, but back in the late 90's, very few college students had their own computer - it was a handful of us).

He was the best in the dorm at first, since he was the only one who had played it, but I soon overtook him to the thrill of the rest of my dormmates (dude was a dick). From then on, we played all the time. My grades actually suffered because of it.

Interstingly, for me it was Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3, for which most people don't even know you can play online. I got it circa 2002 or 2003 I think and got pretty good at the game. Most competetive mode was capture the flag with 10 seconds timer, where essentially the entire game was played in one combo - if you bail, you are out. There were also ofc some high score competitions, with a twist being that you if you collide with other player, the slower one bails, so you could mess with other people's combos.

Then I moved on to Warcraft 3 and ultimately Dota, which was my last game before taking a roughly 10 years brake from gaming in general.

Oh, I also played some Quake and Counter Strike before that, but it was always via LAN in cafes, since the internet in my country was only dial-up and with pretty terrible quality back then.

Never could get into online multiplayer

Cod, battlefield, halo and fortnight always felt like a noob and got killed if a player looks at you. After getting killed and Respawn 100 times and never getting a kill, muck that multiplayer sucks arse.

Bought orange box and played a game I never heard of tf2.

Should put tf2 on this generation console's, surely there would be enough players is it was cross platform and PS4 and xbox1 would easily run a game that is what 7 years old?

starcraft, diablo 2

I find it funny how addicted I was to these in my teens - early 20s, yet now I have no attachment to many games at all now (mid 30s). A lot of games to me now seem like a chore in a lot of respects, although I do avoid the games I know I would get hooked on (wow/total war). Am I just old?
