SOCOM 2 on PS2.

Never got into PC online gaming luckily for me. It probably would've cost me 200+ hours of my life.

i started with half-life mods, which oddly enough began first with Firearms (obscure much?), then Day of Defeat (beta days!), then CS.

Wow, I totally forgot about Firearms. Loved that one. I think PC Gamer talked it up back when I read it, and I got hooked.

Theres a second age shard (pre weird **** and carebearness) that I've been thinking about playing again.

Theres also mortal online which is supposed to be made by a UO fanatic, but an FPS MMO.

yes, that is exactly how i found out about it as well! i believe they had an issue all about hl mods and they had a guide with how to be good at firearms, which iirc was basically use the aug if the server didn't ban it

I played **** like Delta Force 2, Worms Armageddon, C&C Red Alert, but the game that I would play hardcore was probably Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault. Such a great online game.

This is going to make me feel old, because nobody is going to have ever played this game..

But there was this online paintball game called PaintballNET or PBTerm. It was the most basic game ever, had horrible graphics, but it was filled with tons of young people playing back before FPS games could be played over the internet.

It was made by a guy named DavidRM, who was literally worshipped by all these young kids.

Then only thing left of it is a page at www.samugames.com that lists accomplishments.

This. Warcraft 2 and Duke 3D on Kali.

first game was quake for me as well, but that didn't get me hooked. getting your ass handed to yourself repeatedly and playing with inferior pings wasn't all that motivating.
we also played it a lot with friends on a LAN which was way more fun than playing cannon fodder online.

UO pre-trammel was the one that eventually got me hooked.

The two games that got me playing online reguarly were probably Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 on the PC

So simple to play yet so addictive and fun

First game I bought was the original starcraft. I remember sucking at the game and just playing custom maps, namely sunken defense and bunker wars.

Some people in MMORPG's do that in a month.

For me it was Doom, back before most people had even heard of the internet. We played it on, what was it, 14.4k or 28k modems? Over BBS systems.

After that, it was Descent, but I only played that with one or two people.

But the one that really took off for me was Total Annihilation. I played that thing into the ground, as I did its inferior sequel, TA: Kingdoms. That's the one that made me feel that games in some genres are not just inferior but simply unfinished without a strong online component.
