I played FFXI for a while. I don't particularly have time for large MMO's anymore, but I'll give this one a shot for at least a month

This is obv really early, but once this game is released we should start a 2+2 linkshell. Could be a really good base for an endgame shell.

Had ~8hrs in the tests so far, any questions people want answering?

I absolutely will not breach the NDA and have not frapsed any movies and will not send them to known forum members who PM me.

How is the feel of the game? Is it grind heavy ( aka asian mmo ) or more quest heavy ( aka something like WoW ).

Is the interface intuitive? Can you modify any aspect of the bars?

Firstly - it's in alpha - so everything is subject to change.
It feels very grind-lite compared to ff11/aion/etc - the questing is a little different.
You pick quests up in the central city and then teleport to the quest area where you activate the quest and choose the difficulty level ( rewards scale - and you have a time limit ).

Interface seems very intuitive - and everything is draggable natively ( could use a lock button somewhere actually ).

dlorc,

did you play ffxi? and if you did, what are some of the main differences that you noticed and in general, how would you compare ffxiv to other popular mmos (e.g. WoW)?...and what do you like so far/think could be better so far?

p.s. idk what all you can say concerning NDA, but w/e you answer is fine.

I played FFXI quite hardcore, ~4x75s in 2004 ( played until 05 ), and another 4-5 when I returned for a brief period ( post-wotg ~08/09 ish more casually ).

Main differences: Everything that made ff11 special is still there: global server base, global userbase ( all systems on the same servers ), etc etc.

The levelling system operates quite a bit differently to anything in ff11 levelling and wow/aion/warhammer/etc.

You get most of your quests from the central city hub, and then teleport to the quest hub you want to go to - you then activate the quests ( time limit, objectives etc ) and pick a difficulty. ( If you played ff11 in the last few years - think a mix of field of valour and campaign ops ).

The class system stands out as worthy of talking about on it's own.
All abilities are gained by class level - but you have an overriding physical level. You can use any ability you have gained on any class in conjunction with your current classes abilities.

So for example I could be a tank class - with a bind ability from a melee DPS class and some healing abilities as well.

spells count as abilities, so you can run around as a tank and be nuking stuff if you wanted to.

To switch class and/or abilities you must be out of combat - and all you have to do is switch from eg a sword+shield to a polearm and you just swapped from gladiator to Lancer.

does this mean there's less of a need to make new chars? You make it sound like we can reset abilities and change our classes at will, which is kinda cool

Yes, you can level every single class to max on one character - the nice effect of this is that you can be levelling an alt, someone you know can be levelling an alt and obviously because you're on the same characters you know it's each other.

It makes the game much more social/reputation based as well.

ic, this literally sounds like FFV except mmo style. I didn't enjoy FFV, am I doomed?

Any idea when it's coming out? Website says 2010 but that's it : /

It looks like they reused a lot of the zones from ff11. I can definitely see all of the Gustaberg zones.
