how would one go about tricking your standard walmart employee into giving you this early?

Just walk in and ask if they have it in the back?

Just buy the first Fable and see how much you like it. If this game is really good I'll probably ask for a 360 for Christmas. I loved the first one.

I don't know that many people that played the first, but those that loved it seemed to be in two camps: the guys loving the power to be evil, and those obsessed with creating and customizing their own characters.

The first group obviously like the freedom to be a total dick in a simulated world, like GTA but in a fantasy setting. The second group are the guys that become obsessed with creating and personalizing their characters, in Fable this is through your clothing, tattoos, weapons, hair styles, relationships, fighting styles (kinda), and most importantly reputation.

The combat is pretty hacknslashy but fun, swinging, blocking, rolling, ranged attacks from arrows and magic. You'll start as a young man and wander around a world with a main quest and tons of sidequests you can choose to do by talking to people and exploring. When you're not pursuing a quest you'll probably be exploring the land for loot, trading goods for cash, playing side games, buying property, having relationships, and over time you build yourself a reputation in the world depending on which quests you've partaken and how you've acted when just in towns or whatever. Production value of the game is quite good.

So if it sounds like you could get into that, go for it. The first game was pretty short but had a ton of replay value and I imagine this will as well if you dig it.

You wouldn't think it from reading this thread but a lot of people, myself included, thought Fable sucked. Peter Molyneux is a maniac when it comes to hyping his games and most everyone that bought into his hype last time around was hugely disappointed, but even those that didn't buy in still had plenty of reason to dislike Fable. I won't write a big rant about it but in list form, here are some things that made Fable suck that do not appear to have changed in Fable 2:

1. In Fable creating a reputation involves standing near groups of people and farting/flipping the bird/"telling a joke" (no dialogue, just a gesture) over and over again. There is no genuine character interaction or even any dialogue with the town NPCs. Have a look at the IGN video review of Fable 2... exact same thing. Except this time you get a timing bar for your farts. Woop.

2. Very short story. The plot of Fable 1 is terrible. It has no depth whatsoever. Seriously it is probably the worst story of any RPG on Xbox and 360. No exaggeration. I guess Fable 2's will be too, but obv that is just a guess.

3. All characters have ridiculous pseudo-farmer accents not found in the real world.

4. Combat is very basic and very very easy. IGN review of Fable 2 says "you might not die once".

All these things add up to a game that seems like it was made for 8 year olds. If you approach it as a dumb hack n' slash then maybe it is an okay game. But as an RPG it is bad. Very bad at times. I love RPGs and will not be buying Fable 2.

8.8 by IGN.

And yea, it's not a super mainstream hit, it's more of a cultish kinda thing.

Oh yea, I think I remember it making it into their Platinum Hitz later or whatever. I guess my sample size is off.

I've already gotten two texts bitching about how crooked Goldstein is, man I know some nerds.

GF shipped it this afternoon too, holla.

Hay, as someone who...
- Didn't play Fable
- Loved Oblivion/Morrowind
- Is meh on Zelda: Twilight Princess on Wii
- Doesn't generally play RPGs except for the above games

will I like this?

This game is getting some insanely good reviews from tough reviewers which is pretty damn surprising given that it's an RPG.

Eurogamer just gave it a 10/10, 9/10 from edge and hoards of others. 8.9/10 on 24 reviews at metacritic so far.

If you liked Oblivion and aren't really an RPG'er I think you'd like Fable, as long as you don't expect it to be Oblivion. It's not as open as Oblivion really and more arcadish in general.

fwiw: i didn't play that particular zelda.

i personally can't see any gamer not enjoying this game at least a little. It doesn't really play like an RPG. more of like a hack/slash where you gain experience and get new skills. the difficulty is low, but even if you prefer challenging games, the overall 'fun-factor' should keep you interested.

the only thing i'm worried about is the amount of gameplay, I haven't heard anything yet, and i've only played for 3 hours or so. But that was the main con of the first game. It was pretty short. But if this one is longer, I can't see anyone regretting buying it.

^^ agreed, Fable was possibly my favorite game on the Xbox. Even if its short, its still fun to play through once normally, then again as an evil hero/good hero.

I enjoy customizing the character as his skills improve, one of my favorite aspects. Its kind of an explore the land and build your character like the orig dragon warrior was.

Maybe you will like it, but don't expect it to have anything in common with Oblivion. It's more like Castle Crashers than Elder Scrolls.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ezuXXg3tUVY Here's the first ten minutes of the game. It looks decent enough but also pretty flawed just like the first one. Having seen a few other videos the combat doesn't appear to be as fun as it was the first time round either, which is a bit disappointing because if there was one good thing about Fable 1 it was the combat.

The vast majority of reviews are just nutting over the combat, which has been extensively refined over the original.

Fair point, I haven't read a great many reviews. Ars Technica listed it as a
negative in their review
. I was mostly just giving an impression from watching a few youtubes of gameplay, which is never going to be representative.

When I first heard the trader talking about his stock, some of the things he said made me lol.

Like when he was talking about that mirror. "...a magical mirror, for as long as you look into it it will make you beautiful......just remember the magic only works in complete darkness..., especially with the traders accent and lisp

I've only got up to the part where you go to that cave in the middle of the water.

At Oakfield or whatever it's called, real purty. The Demon Doors look dope too.

I DESPISE the golden crumb trail navigation, it just takes too much emphasis even if on low, why the hell they thought this was better than a standard directional arrow is beyond me, the highlighting of civilians, doors, and enemies kinda life tilts me too, I know what I need to kill, you don't have to ****ing highlight the enemy bright red, I dont want to attack a big red blob.

The interaction system does feel super dated now, even compared to Oblivion, and there's a lot of bugs to be noticed, I assume I will end up obsessed with it in the end though, love the atmosphere, a lighter Tim Burton kinda thing.

Just a few questions...

1 How big is the game size-wise?

2 How long is the game?

3 How much more is there to do after you finish the game?

1.) It's supposedly 10x the size of the first game.

2.) You can beat the main quest in 12ish hours if you don't do anything else, from what I've read.

3.) You can still buy property, have kids, do the supposedly endless sidequests (go to x, kill y) if you wanted.

Soooooooooo I'm a waste of life and have played pretty much all day.

The combat can be surprisingly awesome at times once you get counters, flourishes etc. There's lots of AWWWW YEA moments where you stylishly and flawlessly rip through a group of enemies on some real Aragorn in the middle of a pack of Orcs type ****.

I can't get the ending of one battle out of my head, at the end of a huge brawl where I'm surrounded by two final guys, I clash off the first guys sword sending him back a few feet while the one behind me charges and I ram my sword backwards and it goes right through his stomach out his back, he stands there writhing and I'm changing the camera angle to see it, and I realize the other guy is charging me and I whip the sword out of the guy and catch the attacker in the neck and send him slo-mo windmilling to the ground as his buddy flops to the ground with him leaving me there sword out over a pile of corpses feeling like a total badass. Just really not the type of thing I'd expect from Fable and it's pretty awesome. Gun kills feel surprisingly rewarding as well.

It's not always that great though. The ground finisher in particular is very buggy as you'll often be thrusting your sword into the ground half a foot away from the guys knee cap and he'll still do the death animation, just clunky stuff like that.

My biggest complaints are total package stuff, little things that make a big difference imo between great games and bad ones. Like at the end of one quest, you're on screen with another character and it's implied another character is going to come to kind of finish the mission, and instead of him walking onto the scene, he pops up instantly and dialogue starts, despite the fact it's assumed he's way the hell on the other side of the forest. Or in another mission you're pushing through a lot of guys to save a character, and at the end they juke you and just kind of flash him away and basically say "return to base" despite this whole buildup to that moment and then you have to walk all the way back and it's just tied in poorly. Just a ton of continuity stuff that makes the game feel like a cheap unfinished product despite all the work they did, kinda weird.

Also, WTF, no armor system as far as I can tell? There's actually no armor to speak of from what I've seen, only various clothing outfits that have no protective qualities whatsoever. Weird.

But yea I've rambled enough, time for bed.
