Just a week?

A friend of mine discovered his first paradox title, CK2, and put in 10 hours a day for 2 weeks.

Have you guys seen Quill18's videos on EUIV? I think he was invited to play the game because he has some exclusive videos.

Here is an example: Timelapse until 17xx in observe mode. He also has some videos covering single nations and some gameplay ( arond 3 - 4 hours ).

Burgundy HUGE terror as expected, France even slaps them down early on but they wafflecrush. Interesting to see Netherlands revolting from them, maybe thats deterministic or by event? Also, holy **** Moscow and Ottomans.

This is the most excited I've been for a game since... ever maybe. Last game I was anywhere near this excited for was Diablol 3 and we know how that turned out.

Haven't watched 1 second of EU4 gameplay since the announcement trailer, don't plan to. Planning on finally preordering next week. Been playing a ton of EU3 recently.

I like it that in EUIV there are several parallel mission in stead of just one like in EUIII.

Watching the EU4 gameplay, things that jump out at me:
choice of 3 missions: This is great! super frustrating in EU3 when my personal long term plan is to conquer country X, and the mission that pops up is improve relations with country X.
whoa. trade totally different. looks really complicated. Took me a while to understand how powerful trade was in EU3, so I imagine I'll be able to figure EU4 out eventually.
advisers are changed, not sure complete effect, but it looks like you can have two of the same type. Can think of a lot of situations where I would have like to have 2 or 3 infamy reducing advisers in EU3
general interface looks a little bit nicer/easier
unit production looks streamlined quite a bit, raising large armies was kind of a pain in EU3
defeated units now retreat two provinces instead of one and at an increased speed. I'm not sure exactly what the implications of this our, I'd think it gives you a better chance to reinforce them and prevent them from being routed, but not positive.
hasn't really got into it yet, but just looking at the screen, navy appears much more important for trade than it was in EU3
sounds like infamy has been reworked. Now its more of a local thing than global. without knowing much about this, sounds like it should make large conquest games easier.
cant tell 100%, but it looks like you can improve relations with a country simply by using a diplomat and it doesn't cost you money. think this is a good change.
Looks like they've really changed the process of getting cores, costs administrative points and takes time (this one is 39 months). Depending on how valuable admin pts are, i think i really like this. Might be a pain in large conquest games, but there are a lot of situations with smaller nations, where being able to core quickly will be really nice.

Everyone needs to do an AAR of their first game so we can reread them in 6 months and call each other noobs.

Do people really reload saves that often? I've probably played 30+ hours the last couple weeks and I've reloaded saves twice:

Once was a bug. The event that pops where one choice is -1 stab and a master of the mint and the other is +3 inflation. I always take the -1 stab since I run my games with 0 inflation but this time I clicked the +3 inflation and my gold went from 450 to 11 and I said wtf just happened and reloaded.

The second time I was in a war against byzantium and Armenia joined in. I didn't want to bother sending an army to kill the 3k Armenian army so I whitepeaced them out without realizing they were the war leader so I reloaded.

I usually only save my game every 20 years or so, basically just at the end of every session. Autosave is every 6 months but half the time it will save the latest 6 month period but then olderautosave.sav is from like 3 years ago.

Can someone tell me, in their own words, why this game is fun?

I played the EU3 demo several, several months ago and couldn't get into it, but I also didn't understand anything about the game. I watched tutorial videos and still had no idea.

I want to like games like these, EU4/Civ5, but I have a hard time. I even bought Civ4 a long time ago, after recommendations on 2p2, but didn't put much time into it.

I'm not a big history guy either so....

EDIT: It actually might have been Crusader Kings that I demo'd.

-Like most of Paradox grand strategy games it's hard to master. I like it when I have to invest many hours in order to learn all the mechanics of a game.
-High replay value. I like playing Scandinavian and East European nations and I probably played for Sweden, Denmark and Muscovy about 20-30 times. I love restarting the game and trying to make better decisions each time.
-I am a statistician and I love studying European history and I like thinking about this game as a history simulator. For me, the political map of today is just one of the possible outcomes of history. When playing EU you can experience how the world could have looked like if many historical events had different outcomes.

Poland/Lith look ridic strong. Ton of good military ideas and Lith starts with +4 tolerence which solves its biggest issue, namely that its 1/2 orthodox 1/2 catholic. Still dirt poor, but +10% tax and +10% Production help with that a bit. +1 shock +1 maneuver generals is ridic. Poland also has amazing mil ideas and +10 disicipline is solid.

Poland
Poland has the possibility to form a polish-led union with Lithuania, while they are still in a regency and Kazimierz rules Lithuania. If either Lithuania or Poland leads a union with the other, and have fully integrated Mazovia, then they can unite and form The Commonwealth.

Poland has a large amount of interesting events, including 'The Jesuit King' and lots of events tieing into handling the Sejm.

National Ideas
Poland starts with -20% Cavalry Cost and +25% to Religious Unity.
Folwark System: +10% Production Efficiency
Nihil Novi: -10% Stability Cost
Piechota Wybraniecka: +10% Infantry Power & +25% Manpower
Winged Hussars: +33% Cavalry Power
Wojsko Komputowe:-25% Cheaper Regiments
Foreign Section: +10% Discipline
Focus on Field Defence: +0.33 Land Morale
When poland has all their ideas they get +3 to tolerance of heretics. This makes Poland into a formidable military power which can handle a religiously diverse country with far less problems.

Lithuania
Lithuania has about a dozen historical events, including some tied to the magnates wanting the country ruled in the polish way.

National Ideas
Lithuania starts with +20% Manpower Recovery Speed and +4 tolerance for heretics.
Warlord Dukes: +1 Leader Shock
Auksine Laisve: -10% Stability Cost
Magdeburg Laws: +10% Tax Modifier
Magnate Estates: +10% Production Efficiency
Lithuanian Hussars: +20% Cavalry Power
Statutes of Lithuanian: -2 Revolt Risk
Lithuania Reniassance: -5% Technology Cost
When they have all their ideas, they get +1 to manuever for generals.

So this website tells me I won't be able to run eu4 bc of my crappy cpu speed and old video card. Any way I can cheaply/easily upgrade these things? Would prefer not to buy a new computer solely for the purpose of eu'ing.

What CPU do you have?

Unfortunately if it's super old, new CPU also means new motherboard, possibly new RAM. You should be able to get a decent video card for pretty cheap though.
