Actually you need the + Improve relationships advisor

(AE is reduced faster if you have +X % improve relationships, that's why it is useful to be at high prestige and have a lot of royal marriages. Other useful thing is using the merchants with the build communities ability in trade nodes)

Crusader Kings 2 is free on Steam and CK3 just released. I found Civ to be marginal compared to EU4. The AI in each game is just different. Given Civ is turned based it hinders how you can buff the AI besides them cheating in Tech. EU4 has much more modifiers to alter difficulty and exponentially more depth than Civ (4 is what I played).

the recent civs have been bad imo but haven't played VI

Civ VI is fun for a while, but my biggest issue with it is the difficulty gap between two difficult levels: King and Emperor. King and everything lower than that basically permits you to do whatever you want and so long as you are being somewhat reasonable and easily win the game. Once you jump to Emperor, the AI obtains such substantial advantages that you basically need to minmax and/or play a purely aggressive, militaristic style to win.

I personally would prefer a difficulty that is a challenge and requires thoughtful decisions while still permitting the player to pursue various victory conditions and roleplay your civ a bit. That has been totally missing from Civ for a long time.

civ II with partisans, guerrillas, fanatics etc was on the right track but then they dropped those concepts sadly but the additions of borders and religion were nice

V was just weird for me, didn't feel like there was much for me in terms of world building anymore and yet the advanced combat made it borderline unplayable because now it was too easy to defeat the AI and barely played it as a result would just get bored whereas with older civs would legit look out my window and realize i'd been up all night playing it

just installed steam for first time to try out crusader kings and it's pretty neat - it's lol sample size right now but really don't get why i'm just sitting on the sidelines whenever my brother's kingdom gets invaded by the muslims or when there's a civil war where i'm a low lord and yet i'm never asked to get involved but just watch it from afar

If you've got Xbox game pass, Crusader Kings 3 is on it.

how's this game compare to crusader kings ii or iii, what about the total war franchise?

needless to say i got super hooked on crusader kings, everything i want in a game

It's somewhat similar but also very different in some regards. If you got hooked on CK you'd almost assuredly like EU4 but some CK purists didn't enjoy it as much. IMO EU4 is better but I can see why people loved CK instead. Instead of playing as a dynasty you play as a country instead. The game is much more focused on war/battle as opposed to networking/lineage like CK is. It's as complex it's just more about (typically) being strong and taking people's land to accomplish various goals set by yourself or via chasing achievements.

I can't believe I never realized this before. I was trying to speedrun an England game... got too aggro and fooked up war of roses.... then I realized "losing" that war to rebels converted all the rebels to fresh troops and my stability got reset.

Vicky 3 getting closer....

Paradox saying they don't want another map painter conjures images of "Challenge Accepted."

All except 1. The newest DLC is just a coupon.

Can't help but wonder if an EU5 announcement is coming?

Rise from the dead, my fellow EU fans.

Project Caesar practically confirmed to be EU5

Non exhaustive list of what I know so far:
Start in 1337 (right before Black Death and Ottomans became the Ottomans)
There will be a POP mechanic so no more infinite troops with no impact on economy
