And... yikes, I did just claim France's throne. And this was no ordinary France. I, uh, think I just won. (Don't look behind the economic curtain.)

Just visited Berlin, which is a good place for map nerding:

^ German Historical Museum. I was a little disappointed with their presentation on the Thirty Years War, though, felt kinda brief for something that was so especially cataclysmic to Germany. It did provide some interesting perspective on the Napoleonic Wars and how they kind of gave rise to a national consciousness for a German state that didn't exist so much until they found themselves under a Napoleon-like threat.

Picked up this book: Historischer Weltatlas, which seems better than any English historical atlas I've ever seen. Got that, and a nice large print of Europe in 1910, at Schropp which dealt mostly in more modern maps, but the woman there directed me to a smaller store that dealt almost entirely in antique maps. Upon arrival I discovered that most of them were original prints because they were expensive as hell (like, 1k euros on average). Looking through their catalogue I think they had one old atlas for 120k euros, rofl.

Oh, and in a London Christmas market I randomly came across a booth for this place: Old Maps Library

Their prints are on pretty nice paper (well, linen), gf approved of getting this one for our apartment since it had pictures on the side:

Every so often I get the idea that I should have a big antique map on my wall and am quickly dissuaded after checking prices. The same thing happens when I think about getting a Megalodon fossil tooth for my desk.

I got a map printed on metal plate. This one

I remember they had prints based on vintage maps and I suspect you could custom order one if you send them a high enough resolution image.

The ones I saw in Europe were relatively cheap, I think the 1840 one I bought in London (posted screenshot of) was like 25 gbp for what their website tells me is 20" x 15" but printed on a nice linen material. The 1910 one I got in Berlin was quite a bit larger and also a bit cheaper (20 euros), plain paper.

https://www.framebridge.com/ is a good place to get stuff framed at reasonable prices.

It just occurred to me that I'm a graphic designer who works in a sign shop and could easily just print my own map whatever size I want using a high enough resolution picture.

I've followed the latest expansion a bit and it basically seems like no one likes it. Lots of nerfs and minimal content for what they are charging. And what little content there is most people don't seem to be fans of it.

Heh they tell you straight up NOT to upgrade if you don't meet the minimums. I can run it but I won't be able to run Firefox at the same time, which for some reason is just a massive resource hog, at least on my system.

Apparently it introduced a bug where if you did not have Cossacks dlc the AI would not colonize, supposedly it's fixed as of a few hours ago though.

I did not know there were nerfs. I should look into this.

Oh man, if I had more spare time and access to equipment like that I'd probably make (with my programming skillz) all kinds of maps. Here's an example of one I really like that would be good inspiration for other custom map projects:

I found a 9000x5600 version of this map of Ancient Rome on the second site I posted but I'm not sure I like the aging of the paper. Otherwise it is as pretty clear. I'll maybe look around to see if I can find a better Roman Empire map tomorrow.

I'm definitely going to make this one though, have a 10000x5000 version:

Roman Empire map is currently printing, gonna be 27.5" x 43.5".

Since I brought the map of the moon into the office it has escalated and the current plan is 60" x 120".
