A bunch has been written on this on Reddit and elsewhere, but for me personally I try to save my Guard creatures for the shadow lane especially when playing decks that are long on creatures and short on actions, particularly removal actions, as Guard creatures tend to neutralize the advantage given to stealthed creatures.
That said, I wouldn't necessarily just default to the shadow lane as I see a lot of people doing on ladder. People coming from HS often forget that just because your creature is in the shadow lane doesn't mean he's immune for a turn. He can still be silenced, still be targeted with removal actions and still succumb to indirect effects like the one Skaven Pyromancer produces. I've seen games snowball really quickly when players ignore the field lane.
