ha, looks like I jinxed it a little with my previous post, hit my first major wall with the 3rd demigod - that fight is craaazy solo, I'm seriously considering summoning (which is strongly encouraged story-wise), but will keep trying solo for a while longer. I like bosses with high damage output, but half of his moves one shot me, and the other half takes like 80% of my hp, and I have 24vit, which is pretty high compared to my usual builds

e: lol, I just realised that I have an amulet on that raises my holy damage at the expense of damage reduction - except I switched from holy damage to fire a while ago hopefully it will get easier now

It only contributes to your souls street cred it you beat it with one of these as your controller:

^dancepad, though

so, yeah, I did summon and manage to beat that 3rd demigod - was still extremely hard and chaotic. Peace of advice, even though it feels natural to go for that boss right after exploring their area, it would probably be wiser to save it for later, as they feel scaled for much higher level due to massive damage output.

btw, what builds/weapons are you guys running? I went with str/fth, which was my favourite from ds3, and while it started extremely strong, I feel like I'm lacking cool new weapons now. At the beginning, you get Tree Sentinels halberd, which is basically game-breaking good, with massive damage, high poise-breaking potential and fantastic moveset (jumping attack is a diagonal slash, amazing vs groups).

However, I didnt want to run with one weapon through the whole game, so I switched to great club infused with nice holy ashes, it's ok but just falls flat damagewise. Then I found magma wyrm's sword, I was very excited since it has great scaling with both str and faith, plus I never played with a curved sword before. While the damage is, indeed, great, and it's skill is awesome, the rest of the moveset is terrible, strong and jumping attacks have such a short range that they are borderling unusable even vs slow bosses.

So, now I'm looking for something new, a naturally faith scaling collosal weapon would be awesome, short of that I will infuse my greatsword with holy damage. If anyone knows of some other cool, infusable collosal weapons do let me know, I already know greatswords' moveset by heard, so it would be great to try something new.

Margit did end up going down shortly after my post. Just had to get more patient with it, identified 2 or 3 attacks I was comfortable on the timing with, get in, get a hit or two, get out.

I am finding it hard with this game now to balance my completionist / FOMO needs w/ exploration. I didn't even realize that it was suggested / semi-intended that players would explore mistwoods and western peninsula BEFORE Margit. There is SO MUCH to do it seems and I don't know how to stop doing misc stuff and just moving forward with the game. I don't want to crazy over level but it's hard when you feel like you are missing key stuff by not exhausting the available map.

I'm the same way in terms of ocd/completionism, but you don't have to worried about getting overleveled, the side stuff gives very little souls - you are mainly rewarded with new items/weapons/spells

plus, as I mentioned above, the difficulty really goes up a lot after the 2nd demigod, so you definitely don't have to worry about the game becoming too easy

I would assume you are meant to explore 99% of an area that is boss locked because if you return later you will be over levelled for most of the content in that area. That said there are a few locations/bosses that seem predicated on you returning later.

Hardly any of the map is locked behind bosses. You can get to almost all of the map before you fight Margit if you want.

Sure, but each area has a boss associated with it.

This game is definitely huge. 80 hours in on a single playthrough and still have a few zones to go.

Things are getting really hard in the last few zones. Like, the weird part is that most bosses aren't really too big of a deal, but every "trash mob" is starting to hit just as hard and they get thrown at you in swarms, hiding behind corners waiting to ambush, etc.

There is SO much trial and error, dieing, trying again, slowly memorizing where/what each enemy is and getting a bit further until you finally get the items / get to the next grace.

I ended up accidentally power levelling my character a bit in Mogwhyn Palace. I wasn't even meaning to. You clear your way down the hill and clear the lake, and it nets you ~100,000 runes unbuffed. Then the 2 paths from there are both crazy hard road blocks. So I ended up putting like 10-15 levels on, just from attempts to get this section cleared and moving on.

Beat the game, whopping 95 hours (which might be a touch overstated with the game being left open / in the background while working a few times).

Overall the biggest struggle was (pre-patch) Radahn. (Margit was also a struggle, but this ended up beingly largely due to not realizing at the time that the game wasn't meant to be taken as linearly as the path it guides you on from the start point).

Fire Giant and Malenia also quite hard.

Not sure what to do from here. NG+ or do a new character and play with no summons/spirits.

Yeah, seems like you could easily sink some serious time into a single playthrough.

I realized around mid game that I was simply leveling faster than I was progressing, some bosses just melting, and ended up cutting back on my completionism a bit to go with the flow of the game a bit more.

Going to try to hit some of the stuff I missed on a 2nd playthrough.

square-off is the best early-game armament skill ... low FP cost, high damage/poise break.

change my mind.
