very steep learning curve. I've been playing for ~3 years off and on and still suck. Once you start winning it's a really good feeling. Definitely read some guides, watch some high level replays, and don't be afraid to play. People are going to flame you, but don't let it get to you.

I started off playing 100% random in every game I played. I think that made the game harder for me in the beginning but now I have a really good understanding of every hero.

Is it too late to register for the beta and hope to get a key ?

Beginners should avoid heroes such as Pudge, Mirana, and Kunkka imo. They require a bit more skill and feel of the game in order to use them successfully. Heroes such as Stealth Assassin may be easier to use but it is a very unique hero in that he gets permanent invisibility unless he is attacking. Most noobs will not get a gem, sentrys, or dust so you should be fairly safe. Learning SA may not be to useful since it may teach the player bad habits that they will not be able to use in the future.

No idea on being too late to register for the beta. I would say about 15% of the people I know who signed up for the beta got an invite. We signed up around 4 months ago however. My friend was invited a couple of weeks ago, but I got mine over the weekend.

Pretty interesting that the Dota 2 metagame has transferred to Dota 1 with AM being the prime hard carry...

It's not really a surprise that this happened. The international was a big eye opener for teams to realize how strong AM is. Heroes constantly fall out and others replace them. The current metagame is a faster pace. The games end much quicker so there is less time to farm. It makes sense that a hero that is strong in the mid game who can transition to late game fairly well would be one of the top carries in this version.

Also if there is such thing as a prime hard carry in this version it's lycan. Lycan gets strong extremely fast which suits this meta game. I would say syllabear is also for most chinese teams as long as he isn't banned.

Will probably be a long time before Lycan/Sylla are implemented in Dota 2, their alpha models are not yet made...

Also from Playdota forums, Icefrog has confirmed that 6.73 will be out before this year ends, so could be some nerfs and also apparently 2 new heroes.

I believe there was a chinese article stating that icefrog said he would release it on christmas. The old article said there were at least three new heroes but that was over a month ago so that may have been scrapped.

I expect a big nerf for lycan.

its kind of scary how the last version of lycan with the global damage buff was even better.

I played lycan a few times before the recent surge. Howl was ridiculously OP. I don't understand why it was ever designed like that to begin with. Obviously +50 damage and over +10 damage to other player controlled units is imba. Howl needs a nerf. I remember howling being enough to turn a gank around from the enemies.

I think the wolves might be nerfed also. When Lycan gets quick level 7 (which is basically every game) his wolves will just rape supports like CM, rhasta, or lion. There is no reason why the wolves should be able to take out a hero by themselves.

Who is Lycan? I'm not seeing that hero on the hero list?

Lycan is in Dota 1 only.

Having the Kiev tournament in the background while doing some work, quite a few of the games so far have been gg'd ~20 mins with push strats, watching the Na'Vi game right now.

Disgusting amount of farm on XBOCT in the Na'Vi game, had rapier,bf,sny,midas,treads <30 mins with AM crushed the other team...
