Do you need head phones?
As a former EQ sucka who went into WoW after the BC expansion had come out, here are my five cents.
The only thing you really HAVE to do immediately is go into the set-up options and turn off the scrolling quest text. After that just take your time, enjoy the scenery, and start grinding quests by yourself. Coming from EQ, I found the basic gameplay pretty similar but improved in every way compared to Everquest. The inventory system, the quest interface, etc etc are all intuitive to someone used to MMOs.
I wouldn't worry about headphones or a guild or anything at once. Play the vanilla game for a while (don't even bother buying the Burning Crusade until you know you'll like it) - in fact, Blizzard gives you a couple of weeks free if you go to their website.
Once you get through your free trial you'll have a good idea whether to bother going further. At that point it will be more choices; like, do you prefer faction PvPor more PvE stuff?
Let me know if you have more specific questions once you get going exploring the game; but at first just play through the starting area for whatever race/class you pick and see if you like the feel of the game. Also, for starting out there is really no benefit to picking any one class over another; it all depends on your preferences. Currently at high levels certain classes have gotten lots of love (paladins, druids, hunters, warriors) while certain others have gotten less than optimal boosts (shadow priests, warlocks). I'm sure this will be addressed once the expansion actually comes out and everyone levels to 80.
