You could also try mmo-champion, it's a decent mid-way point between the WoW forums and the nazi-moderated ElitistJerks. There is certainly class QQ and whatnot, but they are pretty quick to hand out infractions/bans for anything resembling trolling and it keeps the site a bit more in check then the official forums.

If ElitistJerks is El Diablo's Forum, the official forums are BBV4L and MMO-Champion is OOT.

Quite the opposite, any useful info will be stickied at the top of the appropriate forum, and all the crap threads ... well, they still exist, but just read the stickies and you'll be fine.

Question about BC heroics: I just hit 70 with my frost mage. I never ran any BC heroics. Is it worth the trouble from a gear standpoint? Is the loot dropped in BC heroics better than, equal to, or worse than green Northrend quest gear?

Go Northrend, never look back. Seriously, it's not even close.

I figured that, considering the BC green quest gear was so much better than high end vanilla drops.

I understand that they have to push their expansions, but this kind of sucks in a way. They did finally revamp some of the old world content with Cata but there are still viable areas of play (Silithus, et al) that need love. As long as the gear isn't worth having there's really no point in even visiting zones like that anymore unless you're an achieve whore.

Depending on your rep, you might not even be able to get into some TBC heroics. =P

Definitely not worth grinding rep just to be able to get gear that's easily replaceable.

Yeah I noticed that some of them had the little padlock symbol next to them and I couldn't queue them in the DF. I think my Lower City rep is too low. And yeah, not really worth it again unless you're an achievement whore.

The only compelling reason to do any BC heroics at all is if you want to get some rare mounts/pets at 85.

Orly? I'm collecting mounts! Which ones can be gotten from BC heroics? Are you referring to rare drops inside the instances themselves, or the mounts that can be purchased from certain faction vendors at exalted rep?

Swift White Hawkstrider
Reigns of the Raven Lord

Most of the other mounts from BC are from the Skyguard (daily rep), Netherdrake (daily rep) and the Halaa mounts farmed from items that drop off mobs in Nagrand and PVP kills. I still don't have the Cenarion Expedition mount because I'm never bored enough to go back and grind their rep.

I did this on one toon. It's actually a pretty easy rep grind because of the coilfang armanents that drop, essentially doubling your rep gain speed. You could also theoretically buy your way through the grind, but it would probably take a while due to volume of turn-in stuff on the AH.

I thought halfway through honored you couldn't do turn ins anymore and had to run heroic zangarmarsh dungeons? Wrong?

Coilfang Armanents can be turned in all the way to exalted. You can do regular steamvaults too, it doesn't need to be heroic.

... still, it's hard to get motivated to smash through old content repeatedly, kind of boring.

Even if you ran some BC raids and got purple gear, you'd still be replacing that in 2 levels.

Another pro-tip question: Is grinding for gold ever efficient?

I've found a couple of spots in the game where I can get constant kills and constant money drops. Is this the most efficient way to make gold (outside of buying it and hoping not to get caught, obviously)? Or is it pretty much always better to work the AH via crafting/gathering/etc?

Obviously these spots are good for the "Got My Mind on My Money" achieve but I want to be sure I'm doing it the best way.

Working the AH with your professions and straight buy-low-sell-high is the best gold/effort in the game. You should especially not be grinding mobs just for the sake of the couple silver they drop. If you want to kill stuff to make gold, farm volatiles, or just do your dailies and collect quest rewards on top of your kills.

pretty sure no one really cares if you buy gold. As long as blizzard makes you thiink they do though, people like you will never buy it

There is a cata level potion called Potion of Treasure Tracking that causes cata level mobs to drop tiny treasure chests for an hour. If you can combine that with skinning or an area that has mobs that drop a lot of cloth you can make a decent amount of money.

Making money from professions and farming the AH is always going to be more efficient though.

doing it in a skinning area sounds like a terrible idea. wasnt it shown that hose potions cost more to make than you get in return?

You wanna make easy money at 85?

Go solo some old raid bosses. Think they still drop ~150g+ per kill.

Not a great way to make money, but better than grinding level appropriate mobs for hours on end.

I think the potions are a pretty bad idea. They cost a lot but don't give an equal amount in return. I remember selling a few at the start of Cata when I used them for leveling purposes. I put a high price tag because the description sounded more interesting than I knew it was. Felt like I'd ripped someone off when I sold it.

Anyone know how much JP bosses in ZA/ZG drop compared to reg Heroics?

The mat cost on my server is about 40g. The lowest possible average value of a tiny treasure chest is about 5g, and they have a 5% drop rate, so in order to make a profit from using them, you would only need to kill 160 mobs in an hour, or about one every 22.5s.

There are tons of areas in cata with a bunch of mobs that are already half dead or have very low HP to start with, so if you were intent on making gold the hard way and had a class with some good nuking abilities, you could def make a profit doing this.

I suggested skinning because there are a couple areas with half-dead dragon mobs that drop black dragon scales, which still sell for a decent price.
