I don't agree with this though. They are making all the right moves. Delaying the start of the closed beta, whether or not intentional, is genius. The way to make someone want something more is to tell them they can't have it with chance of maybe getting it soon. The more exclusive the more special it seems. Especially with something that has such a good reputation. It's mean, but it's good marketing.
Also the type of person who would opt in to the beta is far less likely to be an impulsive buyer or casual diablo fan than the average eventual purchaser of the game. Most casual fans are content seeing videos put on the front page of gamespot or ign or whatever.
I know a lot of people who bought SC2 and quickly got bored with it or just don't play it anymore. I would put them in the impulsive buyer category. Basically they play lots of games just to pass the time. They will most likely buy D3, but they probably have no idea how to even opt into the D3 beta.
