Are you serious? I just finished the game and never noticed that! I kept going to the inventory to see where to go. Anyway, the game was good, but "close to flawless"? That's overly generous. The plot wasn't all that shocking. (To be fair though, it seems like that's getting hard to do for any game.) And it's not too hard to guess what the general direction of the plot will be from about 2 hours in. I finished it in 12 hours, which seems almost criminally short for a non-multiplayer game, and I have no desire to replay it. I was getting bored with the repetition about half way in. It's a good game though. Easily worth renting, but I would never bother buying.

I rented this from GF and actually wasn't too impressed. Great atmosphere but I was bored with the gameplay by the time I hit the med lab. Reading about the other weapons, maybe one sounded interesting and I just wasn't looking forward to stasis/dismember for the next dozen hours.

Has anyone tried this on the hardest default setting? Maybe I just suck at dismembering and am aiming for the wrong body parts, but it keeps taking me 6-8 bullets to kill people and then I out of ammo quickly with nowhere to find more and I end up dying. The melee attacks seem worthless as well b/c it takes 4-5 hacks to put an alien down and by then he's taken half your life.

yeah I played on hardest. Its not easy, the key is to use stasis effectively. Shoot the arms off -- I usually aimed right at the shoulder. You can easily do it in 4 shots (sometimes less IIRC) with a non upgraded cutter. Also melee does suck, but if you are near a stasis recharger then you can just freeze them and go to town. I only played up till the med lab so not sure, perhaps you are fighting harder enemies then the standard necromorph or whatever.

How much playability is there? Can you beat it in 1 renting? 2 renting? Buy or Rent?

He said you can play it in one weekend on hardcore, so I guess you can make it in one rent. And there is no multiplayer. So...

I made the mistake of playing on normal thinking I was rusty with shooters. Turned out to be way too easy. I hardly needed stasis and ended up using it only to avoid those awkward-to-aim close quarters situations. My tactic was to go through every enemy and shoot off a leg, then go through them again and shoot off an arm/talon (or more) to finish them off.

Oh and melee did seem nearly worthless to me as well. There were some situations where I swung ten times at a guy without dismembering. Telekenisis with anything but those red canisters seemed pretty useless too.

Yah I tried the stasis trick to freeze them and then hack away w/melee, but even then I couldn't kill it by the time it unfroze. Telekinesis is somewhat effective too with the right items. After about my 3rd time through without being able to beat Ch. 1 b/c of ammo limitations I would start running away from enemies you don't have to beat to advance or just cheating and continually using stasis+melee whenever near a stasis reload area.

To me, this is a pretty clear indicator of when a game is no longer fun.

what is your basis here?
Most single player campaigns in most games you can beat in under 10 hours, weather they include multiplayer or not.

Only games I can think of off the top of my head that would be longer than 12 hours are RPG's.

I just finished the game on hard, and I really enjoyed it. It has a very bioshock feel to it. Im sure the developers were influenced by it.

I must say on hard this game is impossible to beat(w/o cheating). Its real easy to run low on ammo even when you stock up heavily at the store. Melee is horribly ineffecient. Even against the standard enemies melee is awful. I dont even want to imagine how many melees it takes to kill a dark necromorph.

The cheating I mentioned was the infinite refills on Stasis. I can't even imagine trying to make it thru the game w/o using it. Sure you can buy stasis refills and improve it at the Benches, but that just takes away from improving your weapon and money thats desperately needed for buying ammo.

Theres actually an IMPOSSIBLE difficulty thats unlocked. Anyone here want to give that a run w/o cheating?

You must be some kind of idiot savant then. You can probably beat battletoads as well, imo.

I'm on chapter 3 or 4 on hard and haven't cheated or anything but there are def some spots that are tough and involved me dying a lot.

im on hard on level 5. I have a lot of money with a level 3 suit and more than enough ammo for the time being. I only have 2 guns, the standard cutter and the line gun. I use the standard one for basic dudes and the rail gun for when theres a sticky situation. I haven't died too often either. I also barely touch stasis...i use it a lot when I know there is a recharge around, but if there isn't one, im pretty nitty.

Does it get a lot harder or something?
Dead Space Quote

Definitely harder spots in your future. Just wait till you get attacked by 3 or 4 dark necromorphs and you have no stasis. You're gonna die alot then.

Maybe Im too big a pussy for cheating, but the last thing I want to do is spend 2+ hours on a single level because I keep dieing/have no stasis/low ammo etc.

I rented this game and played to the asteroid shooting bit. I wouldn't say I got bored with it, but I didn't get super engrossed either. Beautiful graphics, definitely eerie and creepy and scary in parts...but there's a lot of backtracking, and the levels don't connect enough to make it feel like you're exploring one big whole ship. That, and the way the story is told through audio logs etc reminded me a lot of Doom 3 -- another above-average but IMO unspectacular game. Also all the inventory management gets tiresome. A lot of atmosphere, but not enough personality.

i'm having a really good time with this game. i love when a game that i expect very little of delivers in a big way!

i love that you never get taken out of the experience, i love all of the weapons and
the right-stick time saver. i love aiming for legs instead of heads.

does anyone else think the main guy looks like a big daddy from bioshock?

Just started playing and the f*cking asteroid shooting part is tilting the ever loving f*ck out of me. I think I might just quit playing the game completely because I can't pass this stupid part.

just rented this game, gotta question. I'm at teh store and considering buying a Line gun / Pulse Rifle / Flame thrower but haven't seen any ammo for these. Does ammo start dropping when you have the extra gun or what?

Ammo drops seem to be tied to what weapon you're using at the time. You can also find schematics for all ammo types as you go through the game.

Line Gun is hot, btw.

I am just about finished with it (chapter 11), been doing like 1-2 chapters a week when I get the time. I think I upgraded the wrong weapon. I saved all my nodes until I got the pulse rifle and just upgraded that to full, and I have been using excess nodes to upgrade my rig. A fully upgraded pulse rifle doesnt seem that powerful .

I really enjoyed everything so far, storyline is A+, atmosphere is incredible.

The only thing that bothers me about the game is how it takes time to actually turn around. I am too much of an Quake / CS junkie I guess.

Trying to figure out what I should start next. I have narrowed it down to:

Mirrors Edge
Metal Gear 4
Resistance 2 (the first one was fun at first... then got really repetitive and boring..so I am considering holding off)

Pulse rifle is probably second worst weapon behind flamethrower. I personally went Plasma Cutter -> Line Gun -> Contact Beam -> Force Gun as far as weapons on normal playthroughs.

Assuming you aren't an achievement whore I'd go with Mirror's Edge as it's only like 10 hours.
