However, I seem to suck at it pretty badly. I started on easy and was able to do pretty well with Poland so I moved up to normal and have been having trouble. Any strategy guides out there or tips others have?

This game seams a lot like the old Koei "romance of the three kings" games. Where managing people is more important than anything else in the game. In some way this is the most realistic of grand strategy games since in real life you can't micromanage every battle and village in any large nation.

yes, this game is awesome

however, i dont seem to understand how succession works, so i just keep assassinating people until i get the person i want. luckily you can just pay off the pope to get the piety back (although that old bastard keeps raising his ****in rates)

1) pick out a dutchy or kingdom u wanna pinch and click the 'claimants' tab

2) find a claimant who will defect to your court (not hard)

3) marry him to one of your daughters to make him part of ur house

4) now u can invade under the pretext of his claim and if u win the dude will be ur vassal! (not sure wat happens if ur invading a kingdom, but works for dutchies)

You need to do it matrilineally or you can lose the dynasty line and the claim.

What kind of rules? Start as counts? Dukes? Any limit on early cheese marriages (like Duchess Toscana or the daughter in Aquitaine), or on assassinations?

What decides what my main Kingdom is. i was originally an Irish OPM and I got the kingdom of Ireland and Wales. When my guy died his son became the King of Wales as his flag. What made him pick Wales over Ireland?

Its easily the best game on release paradox has ever put out, and probably better on release than vicky 2 or hoi3 after multiple patches and expansions.
