Another one

Quote:
Lord Mayor Oliver Cromwell starts an Elective Monarchy faction against the son of James VI (who inherited England from Queen Elizabeth 'the Chaste'), Charles I who is tyrant, arbitrary and is trying to enforce Absolute Crown Authority.

Oliver wins and executes Charles, getting elected Emperor but because his primary title was a city, Britannia switches to a Republic. His son is elected after he dies, but has bad traits and surrenders to the 'Charles II for Britannia' faction, with the Empire switching back to a primogeniture monarchy. Charles II 'the Merry' is beloved by his vassals and peasants, because despite being Catholic he has implemented Low Crown Authority and has the 'Cynical' and 'Sympathy for Protestant' traits.
But that's a story for another time.

The only problem with that account of the War of the Roses is that technically the house of York claimed the throne through Richard of York's mother Anne who was heir to Philippa, the only child of Lionel, Duke of Clarence, who was the older brother of John, Duke of Lancaster and Edmund, Duke of York. But I guess that doesn't work with CKII inheritance rules.

This game is a time sink and I wish I'd never bought it. So much fun - my insane ruler has a horse on his ruling council & I just spent all my kingdom's money buying him fancy horse armor to protect him from assassins.

It's definitely a strange beast. 2,100 hours played and I'm still not bored.

Last night my in a new game, just had gotten my first son married to the heir of Wessex (after years of sucking up to the king). Two months later, he shows up back in my court. Why? The Wessex capital had been captured and his new bride was now the concubine of the viking leader. Now, my king and the former bride are in a plot to murder him - stuck at 85% but I have hope...

Earlier game had my favorite of all time series of events happen: my king died, the heir was 2 years old and I think the regent hated the heir and was next in line to the throne. What followed was 6 or 7 different pop-ups, each with a 75% of the heir dying. Somehow the 2 year old survived rocks being dropped on him, horses being ridden at him and culminating in an attack (by the regent with a knife) in his bedchamber at night. "Why won't you die!" the regent cried as the guards captured him.

I haven't really been fan of CK 2 before, but the upcoming expansion has really piqued my interest in the game and I've now spent few hundred hours on the game.

Just love the way that, once you "understand" the game's mechanisms, something like taking over a neighbour's territory can be done like 10 different ways. Then, after playing a few more hours you'll find another two.

I've done some really evil crap in this game to further my lineage: if a duchy's line of succession has only a few children in front of me, you better believe there's going to be some trouble. Killing people so their spouses are available to marry my children rates highly too.

Installed the CK+ and HIP mods and gave them a try: if the vanilla game is getting bland/easy, they might make it more interesting. Can't wait for that DLC to drop.
