I got 3k trophies pre patch with level 8 commons and level 5 rares. I adjusted my deck post patch and got 3.2k with two level 9 commons, the rest lvl 8 still and one level 6 rare. I don't use epics because they generally suck unless you gem a bunch of magical chests.

If you're at 2k with 8/5/2 then either you or your deck sucks. Try hopping on the meta bandwagon if you haven't. Seems like it's best to build your deck around hog or royale giant this patch. Or else sparky if you're fortunate enough to have it.

The calculations have been done. Using gems on gold is best value for money in the long run but you need to buy commons and rares in the shop and you will be a bit behind on epics. And long run means months/year. Otherwise cycling chests will give you more epics faster once you hit arena 7. Ideal is probably a combination of the two but that is hard to calculate.

You might want to read his numbers again. And that was before the increase in gold per chest and the new chest cycle. His calculation are for f2p players and what to do with your first 500 gems. People that spend decent money buy chests because that is the only way to get a competitive level of epics.

Typically its

Elixir collector
Royale giant
Barbs
Skeleton
Ice wizard
Musketeer
Arrows
Fireball

Been subbing out arrows for zap, skeletons for canon, and musketeer for minions (not horde). Not sure if I like it more yet

Value per gem is value no matter the ammount. Getting better value for your gem will result in more golds from donations and a better card pool overall with more chance to have legendaries aswell(not a huge % for f2p since you don't have much gem in the first place)
I'd rather have more cards and lack gold to upgrade some of them since in the long run it will be better anyway.

So is the consensus to pitch my gems on opening whenever I have time to refill?

Once you reach arena 6

Think of it this way:

1. Gem time and you get gold and cards.
2. Trade cards for gold - requires no gem nor time restriction.

Running out of gold to upgrade something? Rinse above two and repeat.

Gemming for gold is like the least EV thing you can do.

But if time is no issue (i don't mind waiting 3/8/12 hours), then it's still more +EV to use gold on opening chests?

as long as you are full of chest and wont have an empty row it s the most ev you ll get

What else are you going to use gold for?

Oh you meant gem.

If time is not an issue, then neither gold nor opening chests would be an issue...

It's getting harder to stay enjoying this game when it feels so unbalanced. Half of my games are against opponents that just flat out have better stuff. Higher level cards and higher level towers. The other half of the time it is a lot of fun playing against other level 7's - it just feels better. I played against a level 9 yesterday and decided it was time to put the game down for the day.

I guess the solution is to just intentionally lose a ton until I'm playing against level 5's and 6's.

it's part of the challenge

of course, sometimes it's just impossible to win. my first game today I played a guy with sparky, lvl 4 epics and 9 commons vs my 7/5/2

Just accept that by the entire design of the game you are going to win 50% of your matches... no matter how skilled, how good your cards, how anything... you win 50%.

There are a lot of good things about the game but a lot of bad, too.

I think they should bracket it by tower level, but that wouldn't encourage people to gem as much.. so not gonna happen

Facing your own tower level more often would probably be the best thing that could happen.

I'd like to see somewhat to forefit a game so you can move on to the next one faster. Third would be a way to disable the emotes. The second two are just quality of life changes, but bracketing by tower level would be the real gameplay improvement.

The balance of the game feels ok. There are times where you'll run in to something that counters your cards well, but even then it still feels like there are avenues to win the game. Sometimes you give up a bad trade, or dump 8 elixir in to an early push and it gets countered cheaply and suddenly you're down a tower. Those games pretty much feel lost. The games feel kind of like a tug of war.

game will be better once we can play some kind of sng or tournament with capped cards

Is there any way to quantify how much of an underdog you are if your opponent's towers are 1 level above you? 2 levels? Should you play differently if you are at a lower level (more defensively, for example)?

Depends whether you are talking about 5 vs 7 or 7 vs 9.

7 vs 9, you pretty much have no chance unless the other guy lagged out.

5 vs 7, just proceed normal.
