For some reason the "zomg how does a phalanx kill a helicopter" complaints about the Civ series really tilt me - it's a board game based on simple math at heart. Personally, I like that the mechanics are simple, predictable, and universal, even if it makes for (insanely) rare battle results that are unrealistic.

Wasn't rare when the game came out.

When Civilization I came out 15 years ago? Yeah, it wasn't, but it is now.

sword man beating a tank provides super lols and wtfs when they occur. Doesn't bother me in the slightest since my stack of tanks is just seconds away from destroying them.

Anyone who's rating Civ 2 over 4 needs their head examined... that or they've never tried some of the mods out there: I'd recommend Rhye's and Fall and Carter's Earth map (if you think the end game's slow on the Huge setting, try "Planetary").

Wasn't rare enough that I, and a lot of others apparently, didn't experience it. Probably some more than others, but to me it was indicative of the poor combat system as a whole and not as rare as some say it became after some patches.

FWIW, I played many, MANY games of Civ4 and never had an ancient era unit beat my modern era units.

Not once.

Freakin, i was perfectly content with my life without having you throw this thread out there...I guess i have some time before my life is once again consumed.

Am i the only boring person who just wanted an isolationist civilization with high tech/happiness? I'm a dirty hippie at heart...

Never played online, used to play "hot seat" games with friends of mine on Civ II and Alpha Centauri, after about 50 turns you all wanted to quit because Friend X was taking too long.

Pretty much, but sooner or later someone WILL attack you.

I roleplay my leader now tho. If i have Ghandi im all for peace and spirituality, if im Ghanghis Khan there wont be a turn after 1k BC without war.

This isn't Risk or Axis & Allies. It's a game were time advances and they should have built technological superiority into their "math"

Sure, occasional a helicopter pilot might crash in a mountainous region trying to chase down a caveman or maybe the pilot has a complete lapse and gets to close to a guy that throws a spear into his rotor, but these should be extremely rare, "once in a civilization" type moments.

I'm pretty sure a spear wouldn't even scratch a rotor of an attack helicopter. Modern halicopers are usually built with cable cutting blades, so a little wooden spear would just explode in 100000 pieces.

Think of it like "over thousands of years your phalanx unit has dropped its spears and picked up Stinger launchers"

Not alone, and not boring imo. War is easy and hippie happiness way harder to achieve. (but Civ forces me/us to build a strong army. I never start war though.)

My problem is that I always wait until I achieve certain technological and military superiority and by that time I don't have enough turns to get the kill everyone victory.

I have had more fun in the games where I turn off every victory type except for military and shoot for that. The domination victory is the one I always accidentally achieve. I've had to start razing every city I conquer instead of occupying them.

If you guys are able to get to the modern age without any real conflicts, you need to increase your difficulty settings.

My first war is usually within the first 10-30 turns.

yeah definitely. I dunno, I play on noble, which isn't even high, but there is always war from just about start to finish for me.

I'm not talking about getting to the modern age, just feeling that I have a decisive advantage. I think the best time to start war for a high-tech civ is swordsman. Once you get swords just fully mobilize and build nothing but swords until you wipe out your neighbors.
