And how does the game handle people being at different levels? If I'm a level 30 and my friend is level 10, will I just do way more damage than him or is there something to balance it out? In Borderlands 1 my roommate and I only played co-op together so being at different levels was never an issue.
Whoever hosts (invites the others) determines the level of the enemies. If your friend hosts as a 10 and you join as a 30, you will easily demolish enemies. If you host and he joins, he will get murdered.
10-30 is extreme. 10-15 is not so bad. If the 10 hosts, the 15 will hardly level up (if at all) until the 10 catches up. If the 15 hosts, the 10 will level up very quickly. The way XP works is that you get points for causing damage individually, but when an enemy is killed everyone gets a big chunk of XP. So if you're a lower level than a host and can't even do damage, you'll still level up quickly standing off to the side because you'll get the chunks of XP every time someone else makes a kill.
