DC11, I actually think it was you who mentioned FACTIONS being great in this forum roughly 2 years ago? I already loved TLOU but had no idea the multiplayer was good. Curious, I tried it out and ended up playing it almost nightly for about 6 months. Only quit because other games had come out that i wanted to play.

Sure.

Jiggy made his two picks, but you can take over the end of first round slot.

So go ahead and make 2 picks right now.

Well I did my 2 picks but unless you were dead set on picking Spelunky I don’t see a problem with letting you take the 10 spot and just having you do 2 in a row and go back to DC11 from there. Krayz would be a good addition to this imo.

I considered a few games for that pick, including one specifically that has had more influence on the current landscape of gaming and will almost certainly go in the next round, but I think Spelunky’s virtually infinite replayability swayed me in the end. In a lot of ways, it’s similar to earlier pick Tetris; the mechanics you use are always the same but the way in which you must use them varies, though there’s a lot more RNG at work here. The fact that this is applied over 16 levels, however, and the number of subtle secrets really puts Spelunky over the top for me. I realize it varies a bit from most consensuses but I didn’t take it to be contrarian, I truly believe it deserves recognition as one of the best games ever made.

I'll take the wombo combo of Link to the Past and Super Metroid. Both games combined with the SNES Super Mario games and UNDRAFTED RPG are the pinnacle of 2d gaming.

Of note both games have extremely active speedrunning and randomizer communities, including a great randomizer that combines both games

FT. TROLLDORM:

GDQ material, SM might be the best run of all time of any game:

Pretty sure Super Metroid was already taken 3 or 4 so you might have to redo that one. Link to the Past great choice and one of the games I thought about taking. A while back I went through an emulation phase, mostly SNES. There were two games that stood out to me, with LttP being one of them. It was honestly shocking how well that game held up even recently, with the graphics still looking crisp and both the gameplay and story highly engaging. I think in a lot of ways its simplicity leads to it being more replayable now than something like OoT. Great game, glad it had a chance to go “in the first round.”

Yeah, Super Metroid was picked. Linking the spreadsheet again for reference:

A Link to the Past is a great pick though, definitely just a timeless game. Of the standard Zelda games, it's by far the best example of the perfected formula. The increase in the popularity of randomizer runs recently has also been really cool to see. I feel like that's become a bit more popularized in general across a bunch of games recently, and afaik originated with the LttP runs.

Krayz, you still owe one more pick because Metroid was already taken.

I waffled between LttP and SM64 with my first pick. LttP is so close to perfect. It is amazing how the game guides you without giving explicit instruction. The formula works perfectly. Get new item >> Use new item in combination with old items to unlock new area or dungeon. So many side quests and optional upgrades as well. Just an incredible game.

I’m a huge sucker for feedback loops in games, which is why I try not to get sucked into clicker games that have really bastardized the formula by providing them quickly and endlessly. It certainly influenced my choice of Spelunky. LttP is an incredible example of how you can put the loop into the game, per the emphasis added to your quote. The only issue i can think of, iirc, is that some of the secrets were random/nonsense that you would never stumble upon by yourself (to be fair I’m pretty sure I completed the game for the first time with use of a strategy guide). Again, glad that it made it to the top 10 with me snubbing it; I have a feeling Krayz’s make up pick will be yet another one of my considerations.

Poop, I missed that scrolling through. I'll take Final Fantasy 6 then, the undrafted RPG I was talking about.

Generally considered either the 1st or 2nd best JRPG of all time, this is popularly thought of to be the best of the longest, most successful RPG franchise in gaming history. It's pedigree edges out my 2nd choice.

I had FFVI as one of three RPG's that are super super close and I can't really distinguish between any of them. All three I've probably played through 4-5 times and loved them each time. Incredible game.

Love FFVI. There are probably several JRPGs I would actually rank above it purely in terms of what I like more, but for the time it was such an impressive accomplishment and took a ton of risks that you never saw in JRPGs up until then. Holds up perfectly today too, pretty timeless game.

This one is different in that not only is it relatively new and still in beta, but also, I ****ING HATE IT!!!

Spoiler:
Fortnite

Spoiler:
I started playing it a week or 2 after launch. It had enough of a cartoony look to take away from the seriousness of what I usually played. I try-hard as hell in all multiplayers, but I didn't have to try that hard in this. With gun bloom and wonky aim-assist (console), I hear a shot, I build a wall, I'm safe and untouched. It was a fight for survival and everyone was new and learning.

Best of all. ITS FREE!!

I have notoriously terrible RNG with everyone I play with. Its truly remarkable. And though Fortnite is a major RNG game, it didn't matter all that much. For awhile.

Then all hell broke loose!!!

Spoiler:
The game TOOK OFF!!! More so then any other game I've ever seen (at least for a multi-platform game.) Everyone and their dog was playing it. You see emotes and taunts from the game being done in professional sports matches. College dorms have rooms where 30+ people watch someone play before its their turn. Families gathered around the TV and did the same. Small and medium streamers blew up and become millionaire celebrities, even playing with even bigger entertainment millionaire celebrities.

Its truly insane!!

But none of that is why it belongs on this list.

Spoiler:
Fortnite has changed the way games are going to be released and where they make their money. It put the emphasis on charging for cosmetics instead of "loot-boxes" and such. The game has made more money being free and not technically finished yet then any other game I can think of. I don't know anyone who plays it that hasn't spent WELL over the $60 going rate for every other game. I'm probably close to $200 myself.

It also changed how a game can change based on the capability of the players and how those players can help shape what the game becomes. The game doesn't just evolve every couple months, its almost a new game every week (that part has slowed down a bit as of late) and who knows what it'll be when/if it every actually releases.

I could write a book twice as long on the things in this game that I hate, or that are flat out wrong. But thats not what this thread is about!!.

Glad FFVI went reasonably early. It's such a well thought-out game, and the sheer audacity and scope of it all is incredible.

A group of people wrote a very long article about FFVI called Reversing the Design - and it's a deep analysis of how the game was pieced together. It's a great read for anyone who is a fan of the game, or game design in general.

The music is obviously incredible (Dancing Mad is a top 5 video game track of all time), and for anyone interested, a group of composers released an arrangement/re-mix of the OST called Balance and Ruin (YouTube Link). Would definitely recommend checking it out. Lots of different genres and styles, and it includes this incredible re-imagining of the Opera scene as a Queen song.

fortnite is super popular right now. but fortnite definitely didnt invent micro transactions or even make them big, they were already well established.

Picking Fortnite is like picking the Walking dead in a tv-series draft. Very popular but not very good.

I completely disagree. Not about the micro-transactions but that it’s not worthy of a list placement. Name another game that has done what this has done to and for its players. Or had the appeal this one has to so many gamers. The best gamers in the world down to people who probably hold their controller upside down. Yes, micro-transactions aren’t new but the level they’ve achieved with them and what they’re doing with the money is.

I truly think that in 20-30 years, when a list of GOAT games is made, Fortnite will be on that list.

im not about to start naming a bunch of UNDRAFTEDs in a draft thread, but i highly disagree with the historical context and think it wont make a dent more than a few other YUGEcraze games that have come out recently.

eta- but hey, opinions vary. imo the easy slam dunk #1 is undrafted currently, so maybe what do i know..

My issue with Fortnite, in terms of a list like this, is that it’s relatively new and we don’t know what it’s lasting impact will be. Currently it’s popularity is industry-altering but will it continue to shape gaming or are we declaring Kerry Wood an all time great after his 20 strike out game? Rating anything in the moment is really hard; definitely a pick that could look brilliant or ridiculous in five years.

Don’t even have Fortnite in my top 100.

There have been flash in the pan games that a wide audience have picked up.

Like, in August of 2016, you could have probably picked Pokémon GO on the same basis as you used to select Fortnite now. I just don’t put the same stock in mobile, wide audience games as I do in well developed well designed games.

I see your points, but I don’t think it’s the same for this game. I think it’s initial success was based on a lot of luck. BRs being a relatively new genre and a lack of good multiplayer’s. But it’s not a niche game or a YUGEcraze game either.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m sick of it. I’d love to never play it again (my girlfriend is very persuasive) and I genuinely hate Battle Royales. But the core of the game is excellent. It brings a lot to the table. It wouldn’t be in my top 100 games either, but neither are a lot other popular things.

Spoiler:

I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've played through this game. I was a fan of Blue over Red, but my friends growing up liked Red which worked out perfect so we could trade. Alakzam ftw.

Forget the incredible game play, and the start of having to collect them all, **** all that. The music for this game was incredible.

Spoiler:

Also I get to use the shows theme song........

Spoiler:

I can argue that this game is not only one of the all time greats but is also one of the most influential games of all time. Name someone who doesn't know what a pikachu is. You can't, this **** became culture, for everyone. These games transcended the video game medium and inserted themselves into our lives forever.

I'm almost certian my fav team going into the Elite four was Charizard, Alakazam, Zapdos, Articuno, Dragonite, Golem. **** Moltres, worst legendary bird of all time.

These games have spawned endless movies, tv shows, mobile games, merch, food, ect.

1. Half Life 2
2. Pokemon Red/Blue
