With the 60th overall pick in the video game draft, GGI selects:

Spoiler:
The highest grossing video game of all time

Spoiler:

Think about this, if you will, this game came out in September of 2013 and is still in the top 10 sold games every single month in current day sales.

While the other GTA games gave you freedom to run wild in an open city GTA V allows you to do this and so much more. GTA online lets players do basically what ever they want with anyone they want to anywhere in the world.

Plus think of all the memeable stuff that comes from this game:

I know the online world has made some big improvements to GTAV, but man I just couldn’t get into it. Like it just felt like the core GTA Gameplay hasn’t really been improved that significantly since the original GTA III. While other games like Destiny have brought in open world games with great FPS mechanics, GTA still had super clunky feeling shooting and fighting mechanics.

Yeah universal truth isn’t measured in mass appeal and gta is overrated it’s def fun but not worth that amount of sales

Irrelevant of what anyone thinks about this game, facts are it's the third highest selling game of all time, behind tetris and minecraft.

Obv doesn't mean its good just cause people bought it but 100m is a huge number.

What troubled sleep have you known, to speak of my dreams? No matter how sweet, a dream left unrealized must fade into day. Only with power can dreams be made real! I see the truth of it now. What good, dreams, without that power?

With the 61st overall pick in the draft, Tehtoes and Captain Binkles select
Spoiler:
Final Fantasy Tactics

Spoiler:

Spoiler:

Fun fact, Final Fantasy Tactics is actually the best Final Fantasy game. One of the defining games of the strategy-RPG genre, this game has one of the coolest combat systems you’ll find. It contains a job system not unlike one you’ll find in some other Final Fantasy games, but this is by far the job system at its deepest. There are 20+ really distinct classes which are all unlocked in pretty intuitive ways, as you have to develop certain jobs to specific levels in order to gain the ability to swap to a more advanced job; for example, if you want a character to be a samurai, you’re going to need to have that person reach a certain level as a knight, monk, and lancer, as the samurai class tends to draw traits from each of them. The best part about this system, though, is the level of customization inherent in each job. There’s a pretty impressive amount of skills, movement abilities, and reaction abilities that each class has access to, and you can only gain access to the skills by acquiring JP (job points) in battle. JP can be a reasonably scarce resource over the course of a normal playthrough, so this leads to a lot of meaningful choices in how you want to shape the role of each character. To add to this complexity, whenever a character switches jobs they can mix and match a certain amount of skills they’ve previously learned from other jobs, so there’s a pretty great amount of player agency present throughout. The combat system certainly isn’t perfectly balanced, but that’s kind of the beauty of it: the game seems tailor-made for the player to discover broken combinations and fulfill that satisfying power fantasy, as the game can be brutally difficult at times. It also manages to make the game infinitely replayable, as there all sorts of self-imposed challenges you can place on yourself, such a straight class challenge where you try and beat the game using only a single job.

The other main draw of Tactics is the story. I again want to avoid spoiling much of it because it’s a game that you owe it to yourself to play, but I can say that it features one of the most complex political plots I’ve seen in a video game. It does a great job of juggling an impressive cast of characters, each with their own political philosophies and motivations that (mostly) track really well throughout the course of the game. The strength of the plot and characterization in the original PS1 version of the game really shines through despite some pretty awkward localization work; however, the War of the Lions remake on the PSP totally fixes this problem and turns the script into a Shakespearean version of itself befitting the literary nature of the story. If you’re at all into the intense political maneuvering present in something like A Song of Ice and Fire, you’re a near-lock to love what Final Fantasy Tactics does with its narrative. It isn’t perfect and can veer off of its strengths a little, but it still executes it better than nearly every other game I’ve played which attempts to tell an epic political story. This is an all-time favorite of both of us, and an easy choice to grab in the 6th round.

I'm aware I'm well behind on write ups and will catch up this weekend, but for now I'll keep taking games in my top 10 and select Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, for my money the best of the 3D trilogy and the GOAT soundtrack

Sounds like we have a real fight on our hands between the licensed music of Tony Hawk and GTA for GOAT soundtrack

GTA III and VC really were great. I never did play through SA and didn't touch V, but man were 3 and VC good.

VC was the best for creating an era but I still like SA more.

I found SA a bit too linear at least in terms of story progression for my liking, in VC the whole second island is basically open ended, and the first half isn't even that long once you clip through the map to get an early helicopter

Back to McGlaven's spot for pick #63, these were people who asked to make a pick but honestly I think anyone who wants to fill in can have it. Like if you're reading this and have a pick in mind just write it up and the slot is yours. Also let's autoskip it and get to Kafja's next pick.

We have a missing drafter and have been doing fill in picks, one is outstanding right now, feel free to go through what’s been picked and make a selection of your own.

I wanna read through the thread in order first, only read page 1 so far but might make a pick when I’ve caught up if there’s still a pick outstanding.

(my number 1 is actually still on the board where I’m up to but there’s no chance it hasn’t been taken yet)

I was talking about the soundtrack. I do think VC is a better game. I picked SA the game because it was my first GTA but I was hoping I’d get VC as well!

I was flabbergasted that a Sonic pick didn't go til just now

People don't really remember with hindsight, but at the time the Nintendo vs Sega war was a real thing, and Sonic was for a time a viable competitor to Mario

16 bit Sonic is better than 16 bit Mario and it's not really close, but they had too much ground to make up at the time

Round 4 Pick 40 - Street Fighter 2 Turbo

In the early 90's, SF2 was a system seller. It's really that simple - I sold my NES to get the cash to buy the SNES to play this game - and while at the time it was the non-Turbo version which was later acquired, that the SNES had the definitive version of the arcade smash gave it a huge edge over the Mega Drive/Genesis.

Prior to SF2, there was not really 1v1 fighting game genre at all - there may have been games that had some elements, but SF2 brought everything together - it had a range of wildly different characters, it inadvertently introduced the concept of combinations, and the Turbo version improved on this by adding faster game speeds, making the end of game bosses playable, and introducing larger move sets for many characters. It was such a smash hit in the arcades that it's believed to be one of the three highest grossing games of all time, inflation adjusted, per lolwiki, keeping the whole concept of arcades alive against the onslaught of home computer/console systems. It really is hard to understate how big an influence SF2 had on the gaming landscape at the time.

Lineup:
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Starcraft: Brood War
Super Smash Bros Melee
Street Fighter 2 Turbo
Metroid Prime
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
