Well, since they've chosen a charity that is US only, I guess it's fair enough to consider the US the main market.

I think it's a pretty strange choice to go with a US only charity for something like this though.

Vice City just doesn't do it for me as a speed running game.

Yes, exactly.

The only other alternative is because you like to help people worse off than you, and the US is not really high on the list of poor countries that need our aid more than those ravaged by war and famine.

tl;dr cliffs of my post: I saw one of these authors give a talk showing Mario is NP-hard, but it's not a scenario that you face in the actual game. What he shows is NP-hard is a new world built with components from Mario. This tetris result is probably similar, but I haven't looked at it. Details on Mario below if you care.

----------

I actually saw Erik Demaine give a talk proving that Super Mario Bros is NP-hard. It sounded strange because people beat that game all the time. Essentially what he did was build a new level using parts from the actual game, and proved that it was NP-hard to complete this level.

The gist of it is that you repeatedly come to spots where where you have two options: (1) small Mario can run through a "tunnel" that big Mario is too big to fit through, and (2) big Mario can break the blocks above you to reach a new tunnel that small Mario can't get to.

You can essentially choose whether to be big or small each time which fixes which tunnel you can go down, but you can't see what's on the other end of the tunnel when you make your decision. You have one shot to guess, and if you guess wrong you cant reach the end of the level (or maybe you can backtrack but backtracking takes a very long time). If you beat the level you have to guess which tunnel is right many times in a row.

I'd imagine Tetris is similar. They probably set up a new board that is very carefully constructed and is unlikely (or maybe even impossible) to set up in the classic version of the game and then give you a couple options on where to put the next piece. If you guess wrong you lose, if you guess right then you have another decision to make, etc. Again I haven't actually looked at this but I'd guess the result is along these lines.

blegh looks like I'll be getting minimal sleep for the rest of the event.

I didn't really talk enough about that Track & Field video. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzYjvK9yrio ) I sum it up well in the first minute. Point is, this Japanese kid who is considered one of the best all round speed runners came in there and slayed it. I peaked out at 9.51 which isn't too bad. I was extremely happy to get this video made and capture it on film because I know it's exactly what people wanted to see from these events. I met this cool Youtuber Arie2929 (it's on his channel and was his cartridge) and without the two of us none of that would have happened. We set it up in the "casual" room and started hyping it up, going ham all night and continuing it through the day. Soon the whole venue soon caught on. That room was comparable in hype to the marathon room during the Super Metroid race last year. And this is definitely turning out to be *THE* video or memething from the event. I'm a bit sad I didn't get even more back room footage now that I see that's exactly what people want, but I still have at least one video planned before all is said and done. Honestly there is just so much to do and so little time.

The 9.41 was picked up by Kotaku and Konami's Facebook page and is well into making the rounds of virality. Over 50k views in 24 hours is pretty damn good. I really couldn't have pictured it any better and if nothing else happens Im satisfied with the way this AGDQ turned out for me. Hopefully we can slay the Goldeneye race too and make that the best run of the event to go along with the best video of the event.

We're going to try to get the Ocarina of Time 100% filename to be "0xwas941" which is something you can donate for, so if you planned on donating that'd be a good incentive to put it towards. Looks like Runngerguy will be doing blindfolded child dungeons before that run too, which is just nuts to see. Even more insane in the practice room tonight I watched a blindfolded Runnerguy listen to the audio cues from OOT and relay what to do to a blindfolded and deafened Moltov who was holding the controller. They got through the Deku Tree in that manner. Just completely unbelievable what these guys can do.

Two nights left to wheel some ladies. There is actually a ton of talent this year (it gets better with every passing event) but most are either taken or just intimidated by my masculine features, style and deep voice (half seriously though.) Got my eye on one though... aieeeeeee #yolo #agdq2015 #9.41 #100m

WG, you got your work cut out for you to beat the Tetris MasterM performance. That was seriously one of the best things ever put on a GDQ.

Yea, tbh I wasn't sure how to interpret his post either and my first draft of my post was to ask for a clarification. Then I remembered that this is the internet and we don't ask for clarifications here.

I think the quotation marks were meant to be facetious.

Also this guy's running Jak as a speed runner and doesn't know a puzzle at the start of the game by heart with 6 different patterns?

the pokemon runner is the SHATS guy from Sonic.

I'd estimate that of the people who don't speedrun pokemon, precisely 0% of them are following his description of what is going on, with all the technical jargon about bits, bytes, etc. He is very entertaining though, showing that just having great knowledge about something and articulating it well, is entertaining

ROFL this pokemon run, had never seen it.

i thought he was at least gonna glitch some kinda pokemon to kill the last dude instantly or something.

but no, he glitches items and it teleports him to the last NPC that puts him in the hall of fame, roll credits without a fight.
