Isn't there a 2-hour window on refunds, though?

I played Hearthstone since beta (quit this winter) and have like 650h in Dota2 (+more than that in Dota1), so I was pretty hyped about Artifact, but I think Im gonna skip it with the current pricing.

I figured that with 20$ upfront it would be much cheaper to get a decent collection than in HS, but it turns out that it is even more expensive. Not to mention that I was f2p in HS with essentially all the cards I wanted (thanks to easy infinite arenas in beta), which will not be possible here.

Gameplay also doesn't seem that attractive, though admittedly this game is probably simply too complicated for stream. Not sure if that's a good thing, though.

I think that with 20$ cost there simply has to be some way to earn cards through gameplay, otherwise noone is gonna play it.

It is the guideline, but it is not set in stone. AFAIK the refund decision is bit arbitrary.

So why not make downloading the game and playing against the AI a free trial mode and then it costs $20 to unlock all the other modes (and you get the 2 starter decks, 10 packs and 5 tickets)?

A big factor that will hurt adoption is that you have to pay money before even being able to try the game out. A trial or demo mode would help the game a lot.

Valve is pretty clearly taking steps to avoid making Artifact a ravenously addicting timesink. Richard Garfield has talked a lot about how he feels that modern gamemakers need to act more ethically.

It's a little sad that the player base has done nothing but **** on them for this.

if it's $50 for the full game then fine, instead he went with the worst parts of both models

its gonna be way cheaper than HS total (lol hearthstone f2p cmon bros) but if you guys dont wanna try it out at all with a starterpack of 20$ that sucks

i need some peeps to play with and make in-game tournaments with yo. those were fun in early hearthstone+2p2

Maybe players are better off when daily rewards and endless grinds don't make them hopelessly addicted to earning eighteen cents an hour worth of virtual cardboard.

It doesn't look like the game will be very expensive.

I said it before but the social contract that Valve should be making with players should be something along the lines of "We want to make the highest quality game without F2P nonsense like grinding or catering to whales, so that is why everything costs money, but you will get top value for all the dollars you spend."

However, early reports are that the game will still be really expensive so if it's going to be as pricey as a F2P game, but without any way to get free content then it sounds like it's the worst of both worlds.

all the updates so far have diminished how much its gonna cost by a lot but I guess first impression is ****ed

The tournament rewards seem like garbage as well.

Aren't current tournaments just custom made?

I think with the 20 cards to 1 ticket option plus selling the occasional valuable extra rare infinite drafts will be very possible for decent players. Especially considering how bad most people will suck at the start.

I'd recommend giving an informative stream another go (hyped and swimstrim are good for this) as once I understood what was going on I found it much more watchable than say Hearthstone. When I watch streams a lot of the enjoyment comes from comparing my plays to the streamer's and having so many decisions per minute makes artifact a lot more engrossing than hs where half the games play themselves.

If you're a good arena player and make sure you got good knowledge of how artifact works before release you should be able to go infinite or close to it since there will be a lot of terrible players playing on release. Artifact is extremely good value for draft players since there's both free mode and tournaments for practising. Even if you only got like 50% win rate in the competitive drafts you will be paying like 10 cents an hour while winning some packs.

Personally I'll just jump into competitive drafts right away since I've been following the game closely and should have a big edge over the average player on release. The possibility of outplaying your opponents in this game is insane thanks to hero deploys and initiative.

Constructed looks much worse though since there's a lot of key cards that should be pretty expensive that you absolutely need if you want to make a top tier deck. Probably best to just play drafts for a month then see how much you need to spend to complete some good decks and decide if it's worth it.

I'm on the fence still. I can't decide. I won't be able to play at launch tomorrow afternoon so I don't know.

It's available to preload now and it's making me want to buy in so I can play it tomorrow night.

Tough decision as it seems they are listening and willing to fix the issues. I'm mostly interested in the free drafts as it seems pretty cool to be able to play the full game without needing the cards or currency. On the other hand, my concern is the feeling of progression since there are no rewards for it.

apparently its pretty easy to go infinite in the "expert" mode, if you're good. So maybe practice in normal draft first/watch "pros" and then you can see.

you also start with 5 tickets I think in the starter pack so thats already a long time of expert mode drafts

If anyone is on the fence you should definitely get this. Have been playing decent bit the past week and this is the first game in so long that has kept me up till 7am playing until I look at the clock and go wtf

I may be biased cause I played DotA a lot, and never played hearthstone/MTG but it feels really fun/balanced and will only get more interesting with new cards etc. I never even had to worry about not having X card cause phantom drafts are really fun and you don't need cards for that.

So many games coming down to the last couple moves and you make a mistake that you see next round could have won you the game if you weren't dumb if anyone wants to play please hit me up!

Even in casual phantom drafts most players seemed pretty solid but I assume cause players in beta are better than avg random.

From what I remember of prizm's hearthstone posts he probably wouldn't get very far playing artifact anyway .

If anyone wants some last minute draft practice this simulator is good. Though all my drafts seem to come out op so I think the offerings might be a little off.
