The latest battle royale game from Respawn (makers of Titanfall), available for free on PC via Origin, PS4, and Xbone. Not sure it’s going to be popular enough on here to need own thread but it might be nice to get all the players in one place. If you haven’t tried it yet it’s sort of Fortnite meets Overwatch, with 20 three-person teams per map and each player getting to choose one of eight legends who have individual special abilities. Apparently it’s been big on Twitch and has grabbed me so far, even though I am absolutely awful - won my first match last night with randos with zero kills and doing 20 damage overall (I did have a clutch revive at least) Well, let’s discuss! I’m on PS4 with same name as here.

Game is so fun. Hadn't really had a BR grab me before, but everything about this one feels great. The movement is just plain fun, and the gunplay feels solid.

The respawn mechanic is a breath of fresh air into BRs, and even the knockdown shields make being knocked into something a bit more interactive.

Best thing by far is the ping system though. Been playing on console mostly just with one other friend and we've been able to effectively communicate with our random even without any voice chat.

Going to put in another 4 hours or so today.

On day 1, Shroud has about 110k people watching and a friend of mine who streams to 25 on average lately bad almost 200. It’s a cool game. I’m over BR, but it’s got some interesting aspects. The TTK is the only thing I don’t really like. Seeing the damage #’s but not getting the down throws me off a bit. If you do play, try to squad up. Team synergy is the key in this one!

The Division 2 beta starts in about 11 hours though, so I’ll be on that for the entire weekend!

Knocking people down is really hard; I get the drop on them and start unloading my clip and just nothing happens. Then they turn around and kill me immediately. Could be lag but I’m guessing it’s more a skill gap since I haven’t been into MP shooters forever. Playing in teams with mics is way more fun than playing with randoms, who like to run off and get killed.

Its probably 1/3 skill gap and 2/3 gear.

Which reminds me of the other thing I don't like in this, and that is the quality difference in gear. Thats the thing that always pisses me off in BRs. The RPG element is too hard to overcome when you're not a high-level gamer to begin with. Someone landing and getting a good gun and purple armor when all I can't even find a gun anywhere gets old fast!

I won my first game. My squad didn’t encounter anybody the entire game until the final kill.

General thoughts on the audio of this game?

I've only watched people play so far, and just got new PC audio so that might play a role, but the audio seems superb from what I've seen so far.

Already DLed on xboxs gonna give it a go on PC at some point soon too.

Side note, always nice to see a free game come from out of no where and be so good.

I love the game, been very fun to play. I'm 'buttleston' on Origin.

A lot of the quality of life stuff is great. Being able to mark literally everything cuts down on a lot of dumb chatter. The ammo management and attachment management is great (if you swap guns it'll swap anything that works with the new gun and remove the rest). Your inventory shows you which stuff you can/can't use. Dead body crates' color shows the rarity of stuff inside so you can go to the good crates first.

Oh, like a lot of the stuff you do, your character automatically announces so like when you recharge your shield or take meds your character says so, another dumb piece of chatter you can just eliminate.

Basically you can play with other people who don't have mics and get about 80% of the benefit of playing with someone who does and is a good communicator. Not as good as playing with people you know well, where talking is not necessary because you just understand each other, but good.

The revive a player from the dead mechanic is really interesting. A lot of characters have synergistic abilities which is fun.

Audio is OK but I personally have a problem where some sources of sound are purely right or left ear. Like say a guy is shooting RIGHT in front of me, I hear it in both ears. If I turn slightly left, now I hear it only in right ear. It makes locating sounds kind of hard.

There's a lot of ambient sounds and it's taking some time to get used to what sounds are important.

Something that I really liked from Realm Royale that no other game has copied is that RR had sort of a micro-inventory next to each players name, so you could see exactly what guns and armor someone had. That means you don't need to ask "does anyone need X" you can just look. RR also had the "turn stuff you don't want into points that you can use to make stuff in game" which was fun. In every BR I've played I've always wished you could destroy stuff instead of leaving it behind.

Had a game queue me up solo, then give me a single teammate at the last second on the Legend selection screen who immediately ran off and got killed. I spent the whole match sneaking around, including several times where people ran right past me, and ended up getting second thanks to a single clutch kill. Was pretty thrilling.

Unfortunately I don’t think I’m long for this game as I just don’t have the FPS skills to compete, everyone is too much faster and trickier than me. All I was ever good at was taking lines to put me in proper position and killing people with throwing knives. However I’ve gotten a fair amount of wins and good finishes just by being a good teammate so I’m not too frustrated with my utter lack of kills so far.

I played twice last night. First game, I was by myself. Landed at a spot with shelter and supplies and just hid there until someone found me and killed me. Second game, we all died pretty quickly.

Inventory/weapon/item management and knowledge are my big hurdles in these games. I'm spending time just trying to figure it all out. I see all these items on the ground and just pick everything up and have no idea what's good.

It's a neat game, though.

EDIT: I'm BuddyLembeck on Origin (PC). My 10-year old uses the account, too, but if I let him start playing this, I'll probably just create a new account for him since it's free.

Lol I just played two more games and I have no idea what I'm doing. I just followed my teammates around. I did get my first kill, though.

Anyone else having game stability problems? I've had mine freeze/crash multiple times. Sometimes it freezes in-game and then kicks back in after about 10 seconds, other times I have to force-close. Could just be my PC - it's a few years old and I did a budget build. Works fine for everything else I play (mainly Overwatch).

Did actually get THREE entire kills in a game last night and had my best finish - 3rd. The rest of the games, I either died within the first minute or just tagged along with my team until we got pounced and came in like 11th-13th. I don't get how some people are such pros already. I have a feeling I won't be playing this too steadily - I know I'll get better with time, but I feel very self-conscious about letting my team down.

I haven't had any issues aside from the audio thing I mentioned

3 kills in a game is pretty decent

If you're dying in the first minute a lot then you're probably just landing in high loot / occupied spaces. That's a very different skillset than what you described before, i.e. more careful planning. I tend towards "drop remotely and be cautious" in BR games but I've been forcing myself to hot drop more and just be OK with dying a lot.

The reason people are "such pros" already is that they play a lot of other shooting games like this one. If you watch videos of top notch PUBG players playing this game their first time, they'll get 5 kills each and then win, a lot. The skills are largely transferrable.

Also, although I get what you mean, anyone who queues with randoms largely doesn't care whether those people are "good" or not. I used to feel the same way and thought I'd get berated online constantly but it's literally never happened.

I tend to play with a small group of players but sometimes if we're short we'll bring randoms in, and it's fine, we have no expectations.

I don't understand why you can't add randos you play with between games. Put a click menu in there to add them as friends imho. Had a great time that lead to a victory, but would have to manually add people to origin after the game?

Yes this is one notable feature that they really should’ve included

I just played another 5 or 8 rounds, and found it to be a lot harder. Previously I was playing latish at night central time on a weekday, and fairly early after it launched, so maybe more/better folks on, and people know what they're doing now. I didn't get a kill in any of those (although also I was playing with 2 team mates who were playing for the first time

I had a weird issue where in three consecutive games with two friends in a squad, my game crashed when we were launching. Essentially cripples them to a 2 man squad since I can't rejoin. I then tried it later with two randoms and no issues... super weird.

Watching shroud play is insane. I mean I know the guy is a world class CS player but he makes crazy play after play.

I have had the same issue a few times. The worst is when 2 people click ready and the 3rd disconnects for some reason and it just queues the other 2 with a random. The no-rejoin thing is awful.

Shroud really is incredible. I remember watching him stream his first PUBG game and he had no idea what was going on and still just crushed it.

I had a hilarious game earlier today. I was playing with randoms and the queue was taking a long time so I had tabbed out and I forgot I was queued. I tabbed back in and found myself in a game in the middle of a fire fight. I grabbed a gun (#wingman4lyfe) as a guy was coming in the door and killed him (and then immediately died).

OK so I've seen something often enough that I wonder if there's not a live exploit out there.

We get down to the final 2 teams, and then everyone on my team gets disconnected and we automatically lose. I've seen it myself twice and it happened to someone else I know yesterday.
