Who told you that junk? This is my capital, along with my fortress area.
In a perfect world, your SUPPOSED to get a 15 cropper as your capital, preferably one with three 50% wheat oasis in it's 7x7 for 150% max bonus. I have one 50% and two 25%'s and I consider myself lucky to have gotten that.
Once you get your capital, you'll want to build your assault, or "hammer" village right next to it (mine is at -12/202). This way you can easily transport massive amounts of wheat from your 15c capital to your hammer village when your hammer is attacking. Otherwise, your troops will starve since your assault village can only produce ~2000 wheat/hour.
Having a fortress area also makes it quicker for you to shuffle defensive troops back and forth by reining them in your capital then being able to quickly call them back if the need arises. It ALSO makes it quicker to send your merchants to your capital with resources from your feeder villages to build up your wheat fields faster.
The only reason that someone might want to start villages away from their capital would be so that they don't overlap their own raiding areas. If you spread out more you can cover a wider range of farms.
