Which was used less, light gun or R.O.B.?

Edit

Just checked Wikipedia, R.O.B. was literally only used for two games while the light zapper was used on 16 licenses games plus a few more.

Light guns had a pretty decent run and was utilized up until the death of CRTs(light guns don't work on LCD). PS1 and PS2 have an awesome library of gun games.

Saturn is also a great console. Batsugun and Battle Garegga are must owns. Saturn is the best console tailored for 2D games and it shows. 2D games that were on both Saturn and PS1 were usually night and day better on the Saturn.

any saturn fam in here ?

also i saw viewpoint for the neo geo (cartridge) today on german ebay. i once had that game... and a neo geo. current price is 280 euro and its still running a few days. i am scared of the final price cause i sold mine for very cheap ... 10 years ago.
I had a saturn. My dad got me one when it first came out for xmas. Obv getting a PS was gto but i had the saturn and didnt get a playstation till way later. I had the genesis, sega cd, and 32x so i loved me some sega. Think the first game i had with it was virtua fighter.

Two games that came out later that i really liked were dragon force and nights into dreams. They also had a shining force game that came out towards the end of it but i had already sold mine by that point. I always wanted to play the shining force one for it of my fav series but never did. Maybe one day ill grab it on a emulator.

I used to have this game system that combined a light gun with a VCR game. Don't remember exactly how it was setup, as my dad took care of that, but there was a light connected to the TV and suction-cupped in the upper corner of the screen. You played a tape in the VCR and then played along, shooting stuff on the TV, as the video played.

In one game, you were a fighter pilot, so it was a video/movie from your point of view, having chases and dog fights with other planes. If you shot one, the suction cup light lit up and you got points or something like that. I think in another game you were a cop or something.

EDIT: It was called Action Max. Here's a commercial with the game I mentioned:

ROB was just a terrible idea all around. The light gun had potential but somehow the developers never really got on board with making quality games for it.

Are you talking specifically about the NES Zapper or light guns in general because there are a lot of quality light gun games. Namco and Sega were the kings of it.

Oddly enough, Gaming Historian just released a video about R.O.B. Crazy timing!

Weird to realize the only reason it was called the NES was because of the video game crash of the 80s. Nintendo refused to call the NES a gaming system. Had to be "entertainment."

I mean just the NES zapper. There are for sure loads of classic light gun games, like Time Crisis. Which is why it's odd that NES games never made use of the zapper's potential.

I remember playing a lightgun game in the ps3 era. It had a sensor on top of the tv, then had a sensor on the gun based on where you calibrated it. The problem was that if you changed any at all from you calibrated it, the accuracy when down big time. It was honestly more fun playing duck hunt on a crt tv, shooting that duck from all sorts of angles.

That's Time Crisis 4 and the gun was basically a bad version of a Wii Remote. The same game got updated to use Playstation Move and that is much better.

I still have the pro CRT monitors I posted itt and still play light gun games occasionally. Point Blank series is my jam. There are a ton of hidden gems on Playstation and MAME though, Elemental Gearbolt is one I don't see many people mentioning.

Night Trap for sega cd was kind of ridiculous to play as a 7 year old.

PSN has a Capcom sale going on, picked up MegaMans 1-6 for like $6. Some of the best 8-bit videogame of all time in that series.

Never did get around to beating that one boss in MM1.

i got some mega man games for the snes and i cant beat 1 endboss. i have to try harder or is it straigt up unpossible?

also: re: shining force 3 on saturn. it seems like emulating the saturn is kinda hard. but i have no clue about emulating. actually shining force 3 is 3 games. scenario 1+2+3. 2+3 were never released outside of japan, but there is a fan translation patch that is pretty much perfect.

Maybe I just suck but I can't beat him at all, even when I cheat and save my game like a *****. The other MM games I've played are much more forgiving.

As I was reading the previous poss about light gun games, I was thinking of the Point Blank games but couldn't remember the name! Those games were so much fun.

Don't you need 2 of these?
(or there is an online mode?)

Nah don't need 2 and no online, I have a 1 player control panel installed at the moment because I'm going to rotate the screen and use it mostly for shmups. I have a 2 player control panel I can swap over for fighters etc. Reason I got this model is because it's super easy to rotate the monitor and swap between 1 player and 2 player.

The guys delivering it did all the hard work so I'm not sure exactly, it wouldn't be as bad as wood cabinet though. It has wheels on it so that makes moving it around the house much easier.

For some reason, I've been on an Atari kick lately. Not so much playing as I've been interested in collecting the games. Haven't done much - mostly just looking around the interwebs - but I did win an eBay for a few games yesterday.

While it was on my mind, I remember that my dad gave my uncle our Atari and all the games (lots of them) once we stopped playing it 30+ years ago. I asked him the other day if he could check with his brother to see if a) he still had it and b) if I could have it if he wasn't using it.

To both of our surprise, he had the Atari and maybe 20 games and is happy to hand it over (my dad was sure to emphasize that he wasn't demanding it back, just asking, in case it had been sitting in the basement for three decades).

So I'm looking forward to having two Atari 2600's and a whole bunch of games some time this year. I have about 30 right now, so we'll see how many duplicates I get from my uncle.

Now I need to get my NES in working order. I replaced the 72-pin connector, but cartridges stick WAY too tight, like to the point where I almost can't remove them (and they won't work). I must've put the thing back together wrong.

Atari was so fun. I loved yars revenge, and still play it every time I fire up my emulator. My friend's dad completely crushed at asteroids and would play through till he reset the score. River raid was also pretty legit. The sports games were garbage though.

@dlk,

You probably put it together wrong but don’t neglect to clean the games too, as they will just ruin the new connector if you don’t. Everything sits just so in the NES so I imagine you didn’t tighten a screw far enough or something mundane; I did mine a few years back and it worked fine after some tweaks, though I think the games still need to be held into place to work properly.
