I think I played Ikari Warriors a lot as a kid but never beat it. Feel like I got to the end a few times but it bugged out and there was no way to proceed.

I got True Lies for the SNES as the most underrated game I've ever played. The gameplay was so smooth.

Never hear any love for Capt Skyhawk on the NES either. Thought GI Joe was great and ingenuitive as well. I too always got stuck on that certain level in TMNT, was too young to care much tho.

Went to an arcade expo today, was pretty cool. Played some stuff I have never played before like Jaguar, Saturn, CD-i (lol **** zelda), Intellivision, etc. Was disappointed they weren't letting people play the 64DD. Booted up Mike Tyson punch out, and went straight to Tyson. It took a minute to get into the groove and got knocked down twice quick. But managed a comeback and knocked him down twice in the second round...then nerves hit and he got me with a little life left. Damn.

Also...

16 player Unreal Tournament LAN is still damn fun. I could have played that all day. I could tell a lot of people hadn't played it before because I just destroyed people with the impact hammer

Haha, I just watched a speed run to gauge how far I made it. I think I may have made it one level past the tight ropes, but def no further. Probably blinded by my love for all things TMNT, but I loved that game.

Also loved the arcade games that came after. I was at an arcade bar with my brother and my girlfriend at the time. There was some band playing that she wanted to see. Naturally the "Turtles in time" arcade game caught both mine and my brothers eye as we had spent countless hours tag teaming it in our youth.

She came to find us playing the game after the band had finished and said, "have you guys been playing this whole time?". Without taking my eyes off the screen I instructed her to reach into my front pocket, remove the $20 bill that was in there, and requested she come back w/ quarters and a beer. Relationship ended not long after that, but we did beat the game. It only cost about $40 worth of quarters.

I had a love/hate relationship with Intellivision. I had Atari, my best friend had Intellivision. When I would go to his house, he would kick my ass in every game.

It was totally unfair because of the controls. Every game had a plastic overlay card that went over the number pad so you knew what each button did. He knew everything by heart and I had to always look down to see what the hell I was doing. Plus, it was easier to press the buttons without the overlay and since he didn't need the overlay...chessmate.

On the topic of Mike Tyson's Punch Out, my favorite gaming memory was NOT when I beat him for the first time. That was great, but my favorite memory was going back home on one of my college breaks and deciding to play NES for the first time in at least a couple years.

Put in Punch Out, beat it on the first try. Dropped the mic.

I posted on facebook after I beat Tyson for the first time. That was Jul 26 2016. This was the first time I had tried Tyson since then. I was shocked I even got that close. I was so ready for a complete mic drop, alas.

My uncle was a filthy pirate in college at the time, so I had literally hundreds of illicit games on floppy disk from him.

Ghostbusters was the one legit C64 game my parents actually purchased for me. It couldn't have been right after it came out though, because I was too young. So maybe in 87 or so. Game was too hard and I never quite figured out how to progress to the end.

My favorite C64 games were Spy's Demise, Qbert, Qix, and mother****ing Moon Patrol. Also a winter olympics type game I can't remember the title to.

But there were honestly so many good ones from arcade fame ported to C64, it's impossible to do it justice.

They were just called Summer games and Winter games, I remember my joystick could not handle all the running , Same with Karate Kid.
Zac McKracken by Lucasfilm was another favourite of mine, end of 80's .

I remember buying (well, asking Santa for) every EA game I could find - I think back then they were a really small company. M.U.L.E., Seven cities of Gold, Heart of Africa - all awesome games.

Was clearing out the basement the other day and found the above games, along with Pirates! in the storage container with the c64. Was tempting to get it all out and see if it still worked, but RetroPi has spoiled me.

Re: Summer & Winter games. Had a friend who owned an Epyx joystick - hated playing the running games against him: he'd destroy me and my old-school Atari.

^^lol

I have been reading Ready Player One to my 9-year old, so naturally we have talked about retro games. We have an Atari 2600, NES, Super NES Classic, and Raspberry Pi with basically everything. I've also showed him some older PC games like King's Quest.

After we wrapped up the chapter for the night, he said, "I don't think most kids today would like the Atari."

I told him that's understandable, as the graphics are obviously terrible compared to today and the gameplay for most of the games doesn't really hold up.

"But I think the gameplay is great!" he said.

I teared up with pride.

Any lurkers ITT who haven't wanted to go through the hassle to set up retro emulation but might still be interested, I highly recommend Launchbox + RetroArch. There are some tutorials on getting everything set up on the Launchbox youtube account.

I recently built a computer for my friend's kids and since their dad had no Steam account or real physical library to work with, I supplemented their HDD with a few thousand old-school classics and made everything run right from Launchbox.

My own HTPCs have fallen into disrepair with the latest KODI updates breaking all of the emulation infrastructure I had set up, so I think I'll be simply incorporating Launchbox into KODI instead and run games through that.

The nicest thing about Launchbox is that it's able to be portable. As long as you don't go absolutely nuts with the game library, which will inflate the size after all the scraping of media gets done, you can simply put a Launchbox folder on a thumb drive and plug-and-play on any other computer, running everything straight from the thumb drive. The computer just needs to have DirextX and .NET installed, which if you have any modern system, it already does.

As long as you're using modern controllers, RetroArch should detect and automatically work with them, too.

Sorry for the Launchbox commercial, but I discovered it as I was trying to troubleshoot "so easy a 7 year old can do it" retro emulation for this PC build. I am just really impressed with it compared to other front-ends I've used in the past.

Ghostbusters on my cousins' Commodore 64 is the first video game I consciously remember playing. I eventually became a superfan (along with the rest of my elementary school) of the movie and The Real Ghostbusters. Every day at recess in first grade we "played Ghostbusters", meaning we each vaguely chose roles and ran around chasing each other.

I hope you are taking the chance to talk about problematic gender roles, transphobia, general nerd misogyny, nerd entitlement, corporate mascot fandom-as-identity, and ******* behavior!

I have one that I bought on eBay in 2000 with the intention of eventually playing Panzer Dragoon Saga and Nights, but have done neither. With this psuedo thing is it easy enough to get your hands on the rare games like PDS, Burning Rangers, etc.?

I remember International Karate for C-64, best sprite graphics released on any game that year. Also platform games like Jet Set Willy were fun. I forgot to mention after Winter Games they released World Games and California games. I collected all of them on original disks, unfortunately I sold all my games in the early 2000's.
