Yes I missed the Toad box and tried to get it later for at least 30-60 minutes.

my all-time favorite NES game

10 or 12 years ago I managed to beat it in <45 minutes, which is a pretty good time without the screen scroll glitch

I'd like to learn to speedrun it for real but damn that glitch is hard

A couple years ago I finally got around to beating Dragon Warrior, which I had never done as a kid.

It was definitely worth it.

Chrono Trigger is in a league shared only by FF3 (and maybe 7).

My favorite game to date has been Final Fantasy Tactics. Has anyone played that?

Tactics is superb but suffers from an extremely easy combat system and OP heroes, juxtaposed with a few impossibly hard boss encounters. If you do challenge runs it can be very enjoyable.

I mean any class that can win games on first turn just shouldnt be in a game like that (calculator flare gg)

I agree. I belong to a forum which makes a bunch of mods for the game that increases difficulty and takes away abilities and characters like that. So I'm probably conditioned to those mods which make the game more enjoyable. Even so, when I originally played the game, I didn't realize you could do that since I was playing blind so that helped (although Orlandu was still broken as all hell.)

People make teams of four generics to battle and abilities and skills have been changed, eliminated or added for balance. (For example, Calculators have had their skill set replaced so you can't Holy Nuke an entire field, and Summon Magic has been toned way down, etc.)

Of course, there are also several mods on there that alter the story line or change the game if that's more your flavor.

If you want a difficulty mod with the same story, "Final Fantasy Tactics 1.3" is a mod that removes calculators, changes and swaps abilities, etc to make the game very difficult. Some people get "Game Over" in the intro battle (the one where the AI controls everyone except Ramza, and Agrias and Gafgarion are helping you.) It fixes balance difficulties from the original (for example, Summon Magic is evadable now, Black Magic has a different set of abilities altogether, etc.)

The name of that forum is "Insane Difficulty" and incidentally, they have similar difficulty mods for many games including SMRPG, but also classic well rated games like Mega Man X, Final Fantasy 6, and more.

I used the level up/level down trick to buff my characters' stats to ridiculous levels. At 50 speed, you take 6 or 7 turns for each monster turn and with high enough attack stats, even throw stone does 999 damage.

Then the question is what to do with all this power since even without it you're OP as **** anyway.

If I got into FFT again, I would definitely do challenge runs or difficulty mods.

The game is so broken. Just like FF8 is broken as well. Honestly, I do give them a break. Back then, to get on the internet to look up cheats and codes was painful. Many still had dial up and I remember printing out strategy guides when I was stuck that could consist on tons of pages. I was in my early teens at the time so if mom or dad was on the house phone and I was stuck, I might be waiting an hour or more to find out how to pass the game.

A blind play through not using the tricks though is obviously going to be more difficult though unless you stumble across a trick like that. So I always advocate to people to play them blind first and then look up secrets to see what you missed. Fights like the random Ch 4 Bariaus Hill and the Monks on Grog Hill can still best players even with a maxed out Orlandu and good support.

That seems like a great deal to me, nice work. That list of games is solid, would cost a lot more than $80 to pick it up separately.

I'm old and still remember the christmas when I got my Atari 2600

Anyway if you're into nostalgia, particularly old Atari or NES games, there's a guy called Aqualung whose youtube channel is loaded with reviews, walkthroughs, etc. I've spent hours watching them. No game is too obscure for him. This was the first youtube channel I ever subscribed to.

Here's every Mega Man game reviewed

Thats a great deal on that NES and games. Pieced out the price would likely be 3 times that in SoCal at a retro shop.

It's a ripoff unless you want to collect the actual cartridges.

Retropie3 ftw...

Mike Tyson's Punchout was very frustrating for me on the NES. I could always get to him and had many close fights, but was never able to "Knock Him Out".

Awesome video game.

From Wikepdia:

Punch-Out!! has mainly been well received by critics. A GameSpot reader poll ranked it as the 6th greatest NES game. It was rated the 17th best game made on a Nintendo System in Nintendo Power's Top 200 Games list. In August 2008, Nintendo Power listed it as the sixth best Nintendo Entertainment System video game, praising it for putting arcade-style fun over realism. Author Steve L. Kent called it the second major game of 1987. Author Nathan Lockard cited the graphics, violence, controls, and the variety of it being a "true classic" and one of the best NES games. GamesRadar ranked it the 11th best NES game ever made. The staff called it a "brilliant puzzle game [disguised] as a sports game." Punch-Out!! sold in excess of 2 million copies. Game Informer ranked the Mike Tyson version as its 14th favorite game ever in 2001. The staff noted that no boxing game since Punch-Out has been as "beloved."

I always thought it was a simple, yet deep game. I never realized how true that was until I watched a blindfolded speed run of the game. There's a few sets of behind-the-scenes mechanics that I never knew about, such as that you can daze your opponents. Really cool stuff.

Since the Wii U has save states for VC games I may have to give Tyson a few tries

Good luck beating Tyson for the first time on a modern TV/monitor.

Well first of all, apparently it’s not Mike Tyson, it’s Mr. Dream, and he's white. So there’s that.

Second, I’m trying on the Wii U game pad and holy hell that input lag. I can dodge the first few punches by moving early, but it’s almost impossible to get my punches to land when he misses me. Delay between button presses and when I punch is so great he usually has recovered. =/

Actually getting a lot farther just watching the clock and memorizing when he punches. More hits on him and fewer on me.

They re-released it as just Punch Out without Tyson after he went to prison. They’ve never released it with him since. Every emulator adds some lag and so does every LCD so it’s going to be rough trying to beat him. No one cares if you beat Mr Dream though, you gotta beat Tyson.

Has anyone ever actually beaten the OG ninja turtles game? I played it a ton back in the day, but don't think I ever came close.

Yep - I remember getting the tightrope things and having no clue what to do and never wanting to play it again.

After watching TMNT and Bart vs the space mutants being speedrun I decided that I'll never touch those piece of **** garbage controls

My parents bought this for me after it came out and I played it a lot as well, but always wound up being unable to figure out what to do in the turtle van after the underwater level.

I recently watched someone do a speedrun from AGDQ, and my best guess is that that I was screwing myself as a kid by wasting the rockets. That was almost 30 years ago though so who knows for sure. TMNT2 was better anyway as far as my younger self was concerned.

Another game that I played the hell out but never fully beat was Flintstones.

So close so many times, but never saw the end screen. I was a god at the basketball minigame though.
