I've been slowly working my way through Mega Man 8 on my Xbox 360, does that count? I also have an NES hooked up but pretty much only play Bubble Bobble and Mike Tyson's Punchout on rare occasions.

Yeah I've been on a huge retro kick lately.

I went a bit wild on building a collection and have a Launchbox setup with ~20 systems from old Atari type systems up to Gamecube & PS2 and stuff. Setup on a Windows HTPC and using 2 PS3 controllers.

I've been playing lots of NES stuff. Some for nostalgia purposes (mario bros, old sports titles like tecmo super bowl) and some to challenge myself to beat some of the harder games of the past that never really interested me as a kid, like the Castlevania and Mega Man games.

Always good times to go back to these systems.

I've been trying to track this game for the SNES for my collection but do not want to pay the $75+ish it seems to be selling for on ebay. It was a classic for sure.

I "cut the cord" years ago and installed HTPCs on all the TVs in our house instead of cable boxes. Each box ran me ~$250-300. I put a $600 version in my bedroom so it could handle a lot of Steam games at higher quality using Big Picture Mode. I use a central media server for content.

Each of those boxes are set up with a Kodi (formerly XBMC) front end and RetroArch to handle emulation. I originally spent the time to set up the FULL retro library for each console, but when you have 6000 games to pick from, it becomes a nightmare. Nobody is going to play Barbie Kingdom 3 or whatever for the SNES, so having it on there just makes scrolling take longer. I culled each system down to a few dozen at most, but the entire library is still available if you REALLY wanted to go play 1994's RTS hit Nobunaga's Ambition: Lord of Darkness for some reason. (You won't.)

There honestly aren't enough hours in the day to take it all in.

My kids liked the Arcade-style offerings the most (Metal Slug, Gauntlet, TMNT, Simpsons, etc) but I'm a sucker for the NES and SNES.

Mega Man is easily my favorite gaming series of all time, but I CANNOT suggest that anyone play the god-awful "Mega Man 64" offering. Mega Man needs to be a side-scrolling platformer. Leave the third dimension out of it, thanks.

My latest tinker was to set up network sharing for the ROMs and assign each gamer in the house (mostly me) a save state range. I can play SMB3 in the living room, save the game to state#7, and then load that off the network from the bedroom and continue where I left off.

Wireless XBOX360 controllers handle everything. I use a program called Xpadder and AutoHotkey to handle more complex inputs and eliminate the need for keyboards.

To be honest, my teenagers don't find it all nearly as awesome as they should. They spend their time on Steam.

I haven't played in a while, but now I guess I'll have to go home and 100% Super Mario World for the 50th time.

My PSP and 2DS has a lot of retro games on it.

SNES ones don't work reliably anywhere quite like a PC unfortunately. I can't figure out how to get a 360 controller to work with SNES9X

my backlog is just completely too much. Not sure if DS games count as retro but I just got an r4 card so on and on it goes.

I'm close to completing Minish Cap, after that I'll probably do Symphony of the Night as my current retro game. I usually have a game going on on each of my consoles (currently have 6 in rotation - 360, Wii, WiiU, DS (which includes GB and GBC), 2DS, PSP (for GBA, SNES, PS1, NES games)

to make matters better I probably have 1 - 2 hours of free time a day so it takes me a year to finish anything

Got a pc controller and been playing 'Super Probotector' at the site below, still one of the best games ever made! The music, bosses and game play is all top notch. Complete it on normal pretty easy, but hard tilts the hell out of me, now I remember why I went through so many controllers as a kid

Yeah I'm a bit of a retro freak, have a pretty huge collection and always buying ****. I've got most consoles but have larger collections of games on Nintendo's. I just got a Jap Saturn though so I've been buying arcade ports for that recently.

I'd say like 80% of my gaming time is spent on retro games and a lot of that in MAME trying to 1cc games. I play Wii U and PC the rest of the time and have barely touched my PS4 and Xbox.

As soon as we move out of this apartment I'm going to buy either a a Namco cyber lead or an egret 2 cabinet and build a hyperspin PC setup for it. I've helped friends build cabinets with LCDs but I'm a snob and play almost everything retro on CRTs. My brother works in TV and his work recently upgraded to HD and were selling off their old equipment cheap so I managed to get 6 Sony PVMs of various sizes for $100 and I love these things so much. I've still got an XRGB Mini for playing older consoles on LCD but nothing beats the real thing.

If you want a frontend for a gaming only HTPC then I highly recommend Hyperspin. People I've shown have been instantly blown away by it because it looks so nice however it can be a pain in the ass to setup. It's worth the effort imo though.

Also this is the best all around retro gamepad I've ever used for PC. One of the best d-pads of all time. It's like $40 on ebay.

Does the turbo button on that Hori gamepad let you set specific buttons to be turbo or just turns on turbo for everything at once?

I keep seeing it mentioned and might pull the trigger for the 6 button sega layout.

edit - I looked into hyperspin when I did my build and while it looks visually stunning, it seemed to be all fluff and little substance. Is there a way to use a grid-style game selection rather then using the wheel? I prefer to just have a box art grid style look that I can easily scroll through a few hundred game collection per system.

Yeah you can set it to specific buttons, if it was just turbo for everything that would be a huge con for me since I use it in games like Donpachi where I set fire to 2 buttons on the gamepad so I can have 1 as autofire. This pad is great, I really can't fault it. The buttons are big and feel really nice, if you've ever used a sanwa buttons on an arcade stick then they have a similar feel to them. The dpad is just godly.

If you want a traditional SNES style control then the Pokken tournament pad for Wii U is great. I didn't even buy the game for Wii U but bought the controller because it's plug and play with PC. It has the same dpad as the fighting commander and has worked with everything I've tried it with.

Yeah that Hori pad seems like exactly what I'm in the market for. High quality retro style controller with lots of controllable features like d-pad deadzones and turbo buttons.

I have 2 sanwa based arcade sticks for fighting games, but would like something a bit less cumbersome for basic kick-back and play type games.

Sucks that it'll run me ~$60 in Canada, but oh well.

Once every few years I go an a brief emulator game binge and play games anywhere from NES to PS2.

Just took down Mega Man 2 for the 10,000,000 time, on to MM3.

yea surprisingly a lot of fans out there - who knew the best investment would have been buying a few dozen copies and selling them now for $74+ (I've seen many go for an even $100.)

GL hunting one down though. maybe check yard sales or the like and find someone who doesnt know what they have.

Chrono Trigger was $80 MSRP. Selling now for $75 wouldn't be a great return over the past 20 years. Officially worse than the Coffee Can Buried in the Back Yard Bank.

+1, surprised as well. Good call. It's still one of like 10 games I am mad I didn't pick up. I played it and beat it but never purchased it. There were about 10 SNES games I'm kicking myself for not getting as well as a couple N64 ones (Perfect Dark and Golden Eye).

Yeh i'm playing the first Zelda. Enjoying the challenge. But sometimes it gets a bit boring when you have to save up 250 rupees to buy a nice ring!

I will be goin through all the Zelda games i recon. Only ever played the 3d ones.

Same deal for Mario. Will prob. go through those as well. Graphics is for suckers.

True, but $75 would be for a loose cart. CIB is probably around $130 these days. NIB is probably pushing $500.

I'm not a huge collector but I do enjoy playing my retro games and I have about 25 for each of NES, SNES, and N64. Last year I bought several SNES reproduction carts of games that never made it to the US in English. Final Fantasy V, Terranigma, and Tales of Phantasia are all worth checking out. One of these days I'll man up and drop the $90 required to get Star Ocean.

There were a lot of games that retailed for ridiculous amounts back then, usually arcade ports. In Australia the SNES ports for Final Fight and Street Fighter 2 were both $150 at launch. I remember those specifically because Final Fight was the game I got with the console and the Street Fighter 2 port was a huge deal at the time, basically the equivalent of a new GTA launch. Other games I remember buying for stupid prices: NBA JAM and DKC were both $100, Zelda 1 NES - $120, Mortal Kombat was $120, MK 2 was $150.
