You are not allowed to engage in real money play or transactions while located in the US.

Those who attempt to play for real money while located in the US may utilize a VPN in attempting to do so. Those using a VPN to play from outside the US are likely to find their activities scrutinized more closely because their behavior matches that of those who are attempting to break our rules.

If you use a VPN to play from Canada, be aware that you may find yourself inconvenienced by requests to verify your location.
Thanks for the quick reply Steve. Clearly if you use a VPN anywhere you're likely to be inconvenienced, even if for legitimate purposes, which is good to know before I try it. (-: I'll make sure the one I'm using has an "off" switch for when I'm on Stars. Or maybe there is even a way to tell it when I'm using a specific app like Stars not to go through the VPN for routing. I'll do a bit more digging into it. thanks again for your answer.

hello Pokerstars Steve,

when I live in the UK for example and travel alot, is it okay to use a VPN to make a deposit via Skrill when I am currently in a Country like Thailand where Skrill only works with VPN?

Thank you for any reply

Steve, I'm curious, what happened to the funds of those who were ''caught'' playing in the US with a VPN? Were they confiscated and lost for the players, simply frozen (and still are), or have they been given back?

I've been told by someone at stars that they donate it to charity.

Please ask this question of Skrill. At PokerStars we do not have any problem with this, but they might.

We evaluated each situation on a case-by-case basis. The answer is not the same for all cases.

Ok...but in general, the money went to charities? Other wise where else would it go considering sharing it among other players wouldn't be applicable as no one was cheated out of any money.

A clear answer would be appreciated.

Money not returned to players was given to charities.

A colleague reminded me that the money is not instantly given to charities upon confiscation, it's an ongoing process. As such, it's inaccurate to say that all money was given to charities, though some has been. It all will be given to charities.

They froze my account with 30kish on it. They reinstated my account a few months later and gave all the money back to me.

It's funny I had an account that I lost a bit on over a few years with stars and I hit a tourney for 25k and they instantly wanted verification... they should just verify when u open right away...was pretty annoying....paying rake for years and not as word from them...

Could you explain why you think this is inappropriate or annoying? Seems totally fine as far as I can see.

Because I may find myself in this situation in the near future I'd like to know what steps players would need to take to verify their location please.

Unfortunately, this is information that is also highly desired by those who wish to try to break our rules by playing from the US through a VPN. I can't provide you any more details.

Whether or not OP did something stupid is besides the point. Confiscating someones entire bankroll for this is despicable and outright theft in my mind. When someone breaks your TOS you should ban their account not steal their hard earned money. This is bad for the industry altogether is it derails the trust people need when storing large sums of money online.

Hi Steve

Out of interest, how much money was donated to charities by PS in total in the last year as a result of confiscations of the sort this thread is talking about?
