I for one am suprised to see his name publicly revealed. It was considered a big no-no for quite a few years here on 2 + 2 and even though I knew him through random NYU connections I kinda followed everyones lead and never said anything. seems he's angered enough ppl to change the rules.

alec, reach out to the family and make it clear you will make public the sons gambling issues and outstanding debts.

take up babyboy on his offer to contact the family best chance imo

Would contacting the family really help? Non-gamblers/non-poker players are not likely to consider a gambling debt valid. It's not legally valid. People think gambling is "bad". They will think OP is a professional player who took advantage of poor little Perky.

In other words, they don't know jack **** about gambling or poker except that they have been told it is "bad", "illegal" and "shady". Oh yeah, they have also been told that, for some bizarre reason, gambling debts are not valid.

Telling a wealthy land developer that his son owes a gambling debt and that he should pay to protect his son's reputation is probably not going to work.

Was this from a loan? Is there any proof the loan took place?

Or is this debt from Perky playing poker and losing?

The family wouldn't be repaying the debt to protect their son's reputation. They'd be doing it for some amalgamation of protecting their own reputation, because it's "right" to pay your debts, to get their son out of trouble, other.

Your preconception of all non gamblers is pretty weird, imo.

I think it is weird you believe they will consider it the "right" thing to do to pay off his gambling debts. We're just gonna have to agree to disagree here.

Making his name VERY public and contacting his family is the BEST course of action should he be unwilling to pay his debts.

I still feel like Alec is keeping so info from the whole picture here though and that is super suspect.

Epic dodging of the question. I already said in my post poker players are ridic naive with money, so no that doesn't tell me anything I didn't know. The question is why people like you feel the need to point it out every single time as if it's actually gonna help. Pretty sure they are just image posts.

Don't be a dong, he is right. Just because it still happens to people regularly doesn't mean people reiterating the caution one should use when trusting people you don't know extremely well isn't beneficial to many others who end up not getting scammed because of people talking about how common it is to get scammed.

Alec is smart and successful and it even happened to him. It will happen to others. Doesn't mean we shouldn't tell people to be careful of it.

Yes but then we should have some sort of sticky, or at least the posters should be giving cautionary words.

That's not what they do though, they come in the thread and say 'lol poker players are so naive' or 'millionaire but you suck at life' or 'lol at anyone willing to loan someone they don't know well this kind of money'.

You really think someone's gonna benefit from cs3's post in this thread?

They might. Nobody will benefit from yours though, that's for sure. Someone might benefit from his though.

I don't know much about him or his family but he's dumped literally millions of dollars into the poker community over time and he is a relatively young guy so I'm assuming that is all coming from his family. If the total owed is a couple/few hundred k or something and he admits he owes it to his parents it seems conceivable to me they would pay it off simply to protect his name and future and, errrmmmm, possibly his personal safety... (not that alec would do anything like that but I imagine there are those that would)

Did this issue not come up before, shortly after the 100k a pop games with Alec and Tom was posted here? Sure someone (semi) respectable posted that his family found out and stuck him in Gamblers Anonymous and threatened to cut off his money.

Edit, maybe it was this. Sure there was some follow up about his parents trying to put him in GA though.

My private email to Krantz about the game I played the other day and the ensuing conversation I had with Viffer about the game got me to thinking about the importance of saying as little as possible about what goes on in poker in general. Even though I don’t think that my posts have at all come close to naming names or offending anybody, the fact that my email to Krantz was made public has got me thinking about how much can go wrong and get out between all the blogs and message boards that are easily accessible on the internet.

Perkyshmerky’s losses are made public by some people who play in his NYC games and his parents cut him off his trust.

This attitude of lets keep this secret so his parents don't find out and he can continue to dump the rest of his trust fund is both evil and short sighted. I'd rather he got some help and took over daddy's fortune or whatever and gambled responsibly and donated 500k a year or whatever for the rest of his life. Better for him and better for the poker economy. You guys are ****ing vulchers.

Any rehab place is going to tell the parents to NOT bail him out of debt. So I am sure they have gotten that advice already.

+1. Not sure I agree with the word "evil" (or your spelling of "vultures"), but yeah, it's morally questionable. There is a point where the hush-hush approach becomes harmful exploitation of another human, and it doesn't exactly help change the reputation of poker players as shady hustlers.

Obviously this is to say nothing about perky's debt to Alec, which is 100% legitimate, and it seems reasonable for Alec to consider contacting the family to claim it.

I once had over 10k stolen from my house by my roommate. To which he denied anything/everything. He told me he was @ home all day except going to walmart for an 1hr. Yeah right.

The day before he moved out I ended up getting 2 dudez from the hood, told them where i lived and when he'd be there. They kicked the ***** out of him, zip tied him up and threw him in his car. They drove out to the woods, destination already had been established, and took him to the woods. He ended up telling them where the $$ was after they threatened to kill him (which was not an option). I gave them half. And he moved out the next day.

Point of the story: I'm not saying you got to go to that extent, but the poker players nowadays are such pu$$ys and let people steal $$ from them and there are no consequences except a bad wrap. WTF

Why didn't he just put it in a bank or something? You know, like 99.9% of people do with money.

Did he bury it?

so you were the mastermind of multiple felonies (with homicide being a possibility if something went wrong) all for $5k at the most (assuming a decent % chance he didn't have the money anymore or, you know, the hoodlums just robbed you as well)?

even if the kid would never go to the police, if any concerned family member got involved you could have been stuck in a federal prison for multiple years. possibly still can depending on how recent this was.

that might be the dumbest story i've ever heard someone tell on an internet forum.
