I haven't got experience of this, but I'd imagine that it shouldn't be too difficult to explain a gap of a few years when you're 18-25 years old. Any older than that starts to look dodgy. The problem is that big unexplained gaps on your CV look like you've been in prison/mental institute, and no employer wants to hire someone with a criminal record or someone who is mentally unstable.
Whatever you do, don't say "I tried activity X (doesn't have to be poker - could be day trading, starting a business etc.), but I decided it wasn't for me/wanted a change of direction". Any employer will immediately think to themselves "well this guy is clearly a failure/didn't try hard enough, why would it be any different if he worked for me?". Instant rejection.
Somehow you've got to spin it into a positive. Don't elude to anything about failing or not being good enough.
