Nah, the cops don't write them. They pay kids to go around and check everyone's parking passes. If you're in a wrong color zone (faculty, handicapped, student, frat row, on-campus apartment parking), have an expired tag, have an unreadable tag, or don't have one @ all they'll write you a ticket.
I appealed one my freshman year because I parked in a RA's parking spot and said that my friend riding with me got sick and I ran inside the dorm after about 10 minutes to see if he was ok and when I came out had a ticket. That one was about $60, so I guess this isn't TOO bad, but just dumb of me.
