Re: *** Official Fe"brew"ary Microbrew Thread ***

Yeah, honours in economics. Gonna try to squeeze 5k hands a week in, 10 hours of poker. I'm back taking shots at 100NL. Starting to get used to the money side of it, the games seem ok if you use waitlists (I've never used waitlists before).

How's poker for you? Did you pass your exams (and therefore finish uni)? What's the plan for the year?

Ah yea man I couldn't do that! yea I think I've finished just gotta pass an assignment and an an exam find out in few weeks, so I haven't been playin all that much so gettin back into it now. Have you tried the joe tall 'game creation' method of making your own tables? Sit down with some odd number $99.46 or whatever then wait till fish join ya table?

Not sure what I'm doin' life wise may look for a j o b soon but not sure on what kind yet it doesnt bother me much at this stage though see what happens.

Mojed, I'm very interested in Economics though honestly I haven't had higher than a few classes Frosh year. I'm from the Friedman school of thought and really think Gary Becker is the best at explaining the subject of anything I've read. Also love Steven Levitt's work, because I love anything that crosses different fields of study.

I obviously don't know much about work done overseas, so I'm curious what your focus is and if you're from a neo-Keynesian school?

Ok... found it...

Review this hand history and tell me how in the world HEM calculated my EV to be at -$600 this hand?? I had the best hand against the other big stack and shorty on the flop, got sucked out technically by the shorty on the turn when he was already all in, and still managed to stack the other big stacked dude..(A3 lol wtf?)
Pot is ~826, which u won, but long run your EV should be 600 below this, so 226, but you put in 400, so you lose 174$ every time you get it in here

that is my understanding of it anyways

Might try the Joe Tall method, though I'm bad at HU, even against fish so it would depend how quickly the tables fill on average.

I like your attitude, I like to wait and see what happens too, things tend to fall into place somewhat.

I've found my school is more in the vein of what I imagine an American school is like, basically neo-classical, free market oriented with monetarist leanings (as opposed to the Austrians with whom I tend to agree on the issue of monetary policy distorting the economy and thus not really being a free market policy). In fact, NZ is a very monetarist country, we were the first to make inflation targeting the primary goal of the central bank, and interest rates the only tool to control inflation (Friedman would be happy).

So it's less European here than you might imagine, not a lot of Keynesian economics. That said, things may change a little at post-grad level.

Personally, I find the argument for free markets quite compelling (though I believe in income distribution from a moral standpoint). But I'm not set in my ways on free market economics yet. Having an engineering background, I'm interested in systems and the stability of systems. It seems feasible to me that aspects of the economy are unstable, that the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts, etc.

w00t just won a $2 tourney with over 3,000 runners.

Sad to say it's somewhat depressing because I never fkn play tourneys and I only entered this one to distract myself whilst I was doing more important stuff, like looking at internet porn.

Still $800 aint a bad return on investment. One must look on the bright side.

3) Go to your user control panel and request access to the Marketplace forum.

Did you do this one?

This has been fixed/improved in the newest betas. There isnt a one-click button to recalculate your old hands yet though. You either have to wait for the one-click DB fix, or create a new DB and reimport all your hands.

It's 186k miles per SECOND.

Pretty sure you got my $2 in there.

First hand, AcQc on the button, make it 100, 3 callers, comes down Kc Td 4c.

Guy bets 300 at 400, I say fkk it... gotta hit stuff like this to win, push for 1400.

SNAP calls K8o, brick brick, gg me.

K8 = the nuts.

I'm surprised it wasn't KT though. Not because the board has a K and a T on it, just because KT takes on this spooky resonance for me in tournaments, like it's cursed or something. This is because I never win with KT. But everyone else does, all the fvckin' time. My theory is that it's the minimum hand that yer average donktard will call an all-in with, which is why it shows up so much.

Trust me, watch a tournament and count the number of times you see people flip over KT in all-in situations. It's weird.

Cash games are supposed to be better.

That doesn't stop me from taking shots at the ol' $2 donkaments though!

MTTs are a useless way to build bankrolls, usual route is cashgames or grinding out STTs.

Anyone else get in these sorts of moods, and have you found any quick fixes that don't involve taking a week off?

1. 4-table max. Standard advice I know, but it REALLY helps. I always ignored this advice but tried it recently and was very surprised how much it helped. Try not to get bored if you usually 6+ table (see #4 below for advice on this).

2. Talk all your decisions OUT LOUD. Identify player type out loud, say his range out loud, ask yourself out loud things like "Is it really believable he's raising me with KQ here?" etc. Speaking out loud forces you to make clearer decisions and concentrate on them more.

3. Review your HEM from yesterday and add up all the money you paid off in bad calls/calls when you knew you were beat. Then, at the table try to remember how much money a fold is ADDING to your wr.

4. Open a window for fresh air, sit up straight in your seat (very important), no TV, no internet, no music etc. Try to tell yourself you are a professional (even if you aren't) and mentally picture yourself being a killer pro, sitting there concentrating, being serious. I know this sounds silly but whenever I put on my "serious business" hat like this it tends to help. I kinda pretend I am a serious poker player with a serious attitude to making money - you almost shame yourself into not making ******o decisions.

5. Tighten up and concentrate on ONLY VALUE BETTING. Tell yourself many guys beat midstakes playing 18/16. Then, valuebet like it is your only job. Not bluffing, not floating, not 3betting, not 4betting. Sure, you might spot opportunities to do those things, but WAIT for the moment when your bones tell you to do them. Until then, your job is value betting. That's it. Keep it simple. (BTW, part of value betting is folding when raised against most players - don't forget that part of the equation. Calling raises IS NOT value betting!). If you don't have spots to vb, don't force it - it's just one of those sessions where you are not getting the spots. Next session, you'll get the chances.
