Re: *** Official Fe"brew"ary Microbrew Thread ***

if you're just getting back into nlhe maybe playing fewer tables is best for a few k hands. 4-6 should be fine while you're ironing out the kinks, start adding more if you're comfortable and playing well

edit: also like kaz said, game select. you should be able to find 4-6 very good tables at 100 most of the time and 4-6 great tables all of the time at 50

what makes a table great?

a fish playing 50+/10, multiple clowns?

what about wait lists? waiting seems silly when there are 10 open tables right away

Here's one of the photo's from full moon party night. Obviously very early in the evening because we are all still standing and able to produce something resembling a smile for the camera. More to come.

if you get on open tables, just make sure you're leaving when games get bad (ie the table is all regs or there's no fish). at uNL and ssnl there's no reason to not exercise good game selection.

Re: *** Official Fe"brew"ary Microbrew Thread ***

yeh was away for 2 weeks exact. Unfortunately i had to pull out all my poker money online to fund the trip. Was def worth it though so no regrets at all. Just gonna restart at NL10 for now. Uni starts in a week as well so i might just rebuild the roll.

hock...can you guesstimate how long you think it would take for a person w/o any skating experience of any kind to feel comfortable playing hockey on ice?

Re: *** Official Fe"brew"ary Microbrew Thread ***

Probably quite a while. Work on the skating aspect first though, roller blading is hugely similar just with a difference in stopping. I'd work on learning proper strides and turning on roller blades and go free skating whenever you can (wear knee pads under some pants might help so you won't be as scared of falling).

Also I'd work on roller blading + stick handling/shooting to get a feel for using a stick and skating at the same time and work your way up. Try to get reasonably good at all that and then they'd probably have some intro camps for adults.

sidenote: just saw your location is buffalo, in that case if lakes are still frozen and skatable I'd definitely go out as much as you can and just get a pair of skates a stick and a puck and put in as much time as you can. It's all going to be about the experience and time doing it, if you're athletic it'll definitely come faster.

I had a friend who started playing hockey when he was 16 at a rec level. By the time he was 18 he was playing Junior B. Really competitive guy and practiced a lot, so he advanced really fast.

Re: *** Official Fe"brew"ary Microbrew Thread ***

well im in school at rochester so its not exactly buffalo but there are a few ice rinks i can go to any try to put in time to learn. its just hard b/c ive never really had the background. i might try and wait til it gets nicer outside to start rollerblading and take it from there, there are a bunch of rinks in rochester/buffalo i can go too whenever as long as there is ice time available.

thats cool...yeah i am a pretty motivated person (well with things i care about...bball/poker only unfortunately) so i would defintely pay my dues and learn the right way
