Haha... I actually did this for a while. Here's my story from that debacle.
In a previous life, I was a limit hold'em player. Yeah yeah, I know... but it's fun. Play all the streets every now and then... interesting game.
Anyway, with only 3 buttons to press and no slider, I decided a touch screen would be sweet. Thus I get a resistive touch overlay sized to my screen. A little dremel action to the back of my macbook after the screen is removed and the flex cable comes out, everything seals up very nice.
Flex cable goes to a little .75"x1.25" USB touch controller circuit board, which I have expertly mounted to the back of my laptop using double sided tape. It has an LED on it. It also has a ground wire that I have soldered to a big pool of solder, also on the back of the macbook. USB controller board has 4 pins sticking out of it, which then connect up to my actual USB port on the computer. I keep that in my laptop bag as it snags on things occasionally.
Anyway, bring this bad boy to the airport. Take off the shoes, jacket, unload pockets - cell phone, wallet, whatever. Gotta take the laptop out of the laptop bag. Work laptop, macbook.
TERRORIST ALERT!
Holy crap an exposed circuit board with an LED on it! Strange cabling! Slot crudely dremelled into the back of my display!
"Gonna have to test this." Cotton swab on a weird probe, tap tap tap, into the machine it goes.
Positive for nitro-glycerine.
Are you serious? Gotta call in a specialist. I go in a special room. At least I have my iPod back now... they let terrorists get through with iPods.
An hour later some 28 year old guy shows up carrying my laptop. I explain it, he gets it, wants to know more about it, ends up saying he thinks he might buy one of those himself. Turns out that trace amounts of nitro glycerine can be found in dust, so I just had an extra dusty circuit board.
Almost missed my flight, but didn't.
Summary:
[x] used to play limit HE
[x] a hacked up laptop with LEDs is bad
[x] dust contains nitro glycerine, also bad.
[ ] cavity searched
[ ] bringing hack job laptop on future flights.
