Thanks. I am hoping to teach high school government/civics whatever they happen to call it in Nevada. I was all fired up to get out there and start teaching this year, but then the economy tanked and Nevada put on a hiring freeze for teachers except for a few specialties (math/science/speech pathology). So I am not sure whether I will be teaching in the 2010-11 school year; it's dependent on the economy out there. But I am fine with grinding full time, too, if I have to; it's just not what I want to do for the rest of my life on a full time basis.

Everything other than moving to vegas is up in the air; that's a done deal, we are looking for houses right now.

Well from what I have heard of you it sounds like you don't do any of this for the money just for the fun of the game or enjoyment. So I imagine you arent doing the teaching to make a bunch of money, but more for the enjoyment of teaching a bunch of snotty nosed teenagers. lol jk of course. I would love to teach college some day.

dropped to 6 tables earlier today and my s/n must have read either 'pleez3betme' or ursetguaranteed'...

mpeth, have a good go at the teaching thing... we need teachers with a desire to improve the system and not for the "summers off"... a great gov't/civics teacher can do a ton for kids with ambition and drive when they let them develop and not attempt to mold them. gl2u, i'll be watching for your threads!

I liked teaching college. I am actually contemplating getting my Ph.D. so I can pursue a tenure track position (I was a non-tenure track adjunct when I taught). But I don't know if I want to teach college enough to pursue the Ph.D.; high school seems like a good compromise that wouldn't interfere with pursuing a doctoral degree on the side. And I really want to live in Vegas more than I want to do anything else, and if you want to teach college you have to be willing to move around, and I am basically not, so I think that's the ball game.

What are you interested in teaching?

I think teaching college would probably be more enjoyable than teaching high school, but I can't stand the research/writing aspect of university life. (I just got an M.A. in Latin/Greek and can't imagine ever wanting a Ph.D.) But I loved teaching college Latin while I was getting my master's degree and I'm working as an adjunct instructor this upcoming semester since I couldn't find a full-time high school teaching job.

Good luck with your job hunt.

agree with everything you said, and thanks.

Those factors, combined with the necessity of moving to wherever you can find a university teaching position, have basically ruled out the ph.d/college option for me.

The wife and I are looking forward to being 45, semi-retired, and living in vegas. No way i would **** up that plan by taking a teaching job at bum-**** college somewhere.

what are you planning to teach and where are you that it was hard to find a job?

I want to teach high school Latin. Had I been willing to move anywhere in the country I would've been able to get a job--a friend who graduated with me got a good job at a nice school in the Tampa area--but I'm a New Orleans native and wanted to stay in the area. There's about a dozen high schools with Latin departments here and most of them only have one teacher, so there's not very many jobs--it's a matter of luck as to whether there are any job openings and this year there were none.

yeah, this is something true in general about teaching, I think--you have to be willing to follow the jobs, as no one location has enough to give you a good shot at landing one.

I am dealing with this by shrugging my shoulders and saying, "plan B-grinding poker for a living--is fine with me."

Yeah, my gf is special ed
Spoiler:
, which is fairly high demand as far as teaching goes. Even with that being the case, things were so bad this year that she got displaced from her old job and had to "scramble" as they call it to find a new job right as the school year was starting. It all worked out though b/c her new coworkers >> her old coworkers. Crazy times these days.

if you are talking about the abbreviated sesh I do through *split* I only need 10k or so hands. If you are talking about the full service I offer separately, 40k is the bare minimum.

yeah, special ed was one of the specialties Nevada didn't freeze this year. Tough biz I could never do in a million years. Like pediatric oncology or something--just far too depressing on a daily basis for me to be able to tolerate.

Give the gf a pat on the back from me--people who do what she does deserve a medal, imo.

Yeah, there is a reason why it's in demand haha. She was at a poor school last year. So many of the special ed kids had really screwed up lives. I wish people actually thought about the responsibility they would face before they had kids.

Now she is at a school in a very very wealthy area, so hopefully their home situations won't be as depressing - but you never know. There could be a lot of parents that just throw money at their kids instead of having a relationship with them.

It's gonna be two of us then

Playing lag didn't bring me any more customer....

at 50 and 100 NL most of the players gave me action when they had something...

Whene I was running embarassingly low, 9/6, I was always getting action... (climbed 3 levels in 1 month)... this must be the sign that often they just look at their hole cards...

Seeing so much donk-betting (by the regs) in the HH threads I just opened made me start thinking about donk-betting. I can see one or two reasons for doing it on the turn and river, but not the flop. Is there a good spot to donk-bet the flop?

I love donk-betting monotone flops with anything from a flush or a set to complete air. And it's also easier if you're in position and the villain checks to you. Other that that, it's villain-dependent. If villain would check behind with AK and you have a pocket pair, you can bet instead of letting him have a free card. But if villain bluff c-bets all the time and folds to donk-bets with air while raising his good hands, then it's not such a great play--you may be better off check-raising or donking the turn.

I find that most good regs know to raise flop donk bets, and against fish why bother. I can see it being a useful move though as long as you vary up your play.

+1, I would never be able to cope with that

A few years ago my school's careers dept made us take this online test which would ask a bunch of multiple choice questions and give a list of jobs with ratings out of 100...

Special ed teacher was last on my list out of several hundred jobs, with a rating of 5/100, lol
