From personal experience, I found that I could not adapt to be much more than a break even player as the games evolved, and had more or less stopped playing and withdrawn most of my roll in early 2011 (good timing). Now, I was not a full time player, and perhaps I could have adjusted and found a way to win if I had sufficient time to dedicate to the game, but that is questionable at best, and I do think it is reasonable that some folks did just fizzle out as the games got harder. I recall how frustrating it was to look at 10 tables and see pretty much 80% or more seats populated by regs who were at least somewhat competent and often times better than me.
I think one of the things that stood out for me was after having dinner with Zachvac and a few others one time, I realized that (beyond just not thinking the game as well as they did), I could not, as someone doing this part-time while maintaining a job and family, hope to compete and do the necessary away-from-the-table work required to gain an edge. For me, quitting to beat up on the home game was the only logical alternative, since grinding it out in that environment with my skill set was a path to busto.
Just my 2 cents here. Hopefully some decent perspective.
WOW NEGI!!! the fact that you are still post is epic, who cares about playing poker any more.
Just came back for the first time in ages, played 100nl on stars last month for almost reals (~30k hands) and won a bunch of BI so I could go to Bulgaria for 5 weeks (I finally ran out of money after spending it all, and am still a student).
So although I guess its mostly only the old FTP regs who would remember me, the initial experience of being back has been gentle and expect me back in August, attempting to fund my travelling life for the next year or so.
