If this is a level, nice one. If not, you have no clue what you're talking about. I have played with Phil in private games in our hometown and he's even worse-behaved there than he is on camera. I, too, was prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt that it was a TV persona before I met him, but he is one of the most ridiculously out-of-line people you will ever play with at a poker table. I've written about specific things I've witnessed before, so I'm not going to repeat it now, but whenever he is losing (and sometimes if he just loses a hand), he is beyond rude.

mhm. you're probably a really good player and i like the posts of your's that i have read, i'm just so sick of everyone complaining about how they run. i did it too, but real pros never complain. they instareload.
oops, meant to write this in the monthly thread as just a random complaint. i got confused since similar discussions were going on in both.

Really, both times I played with him in MTTs he was friendly and nice. He didn't start his crap until a cam was near, then it was over the top. He even gave a NH when I cracked his set of Ks with a turned flush in a blind battle.

Maybe a private cash game is different, never played him in a cash game.

Now I have to reevaluate my perception of him.

I've never played with him, but I've been at the next table over several times and he's definitely a dick when there are no cameras around at least some of the time.

This is basically the reason why I stopped posting in strategy forums and blogging. One day, I realized that money is worth more to me than internet rep. So now, everyone thinks I am a terrible shortstacker and that's the extent of their knowledge about my game. Everyone is happy

fish: gg
Me: gg
Me: play more if u want
fish: gotta pee and burp the baby
fish: maybe later
Me: lol, OK, have a good one
fish: take it easy

I mean, its not that hard to do. Who do you tyhink is getting more action later on, me or some guy who says "wow, you ****ing idiot way to stack off 160BBs with KJo in a 5 bet pot".

Most guys who have been doing this for a few years pretty much have anything they want and don't really want have to answer to anyone.

Don't become an ******* though, i can assure you most fish don't wanna play *******s. Tilting 2+2ers might be another story though. These fish aren't trying to flex their muscles, they just wanna have a good time. This is even more true as stakes go up.

anyway its probably a moot point to most people. but seriously plz chill out.

First (and only) time I ever played live poker there was a guy at my table who thought he was gods gift to poker. He was probably the 2nd best player at table but he kept commenting on how other people were playing their hand out loud. Since it was a soft table pretty much everyone was butchering their hand. He criticized the guy next to me for playing his hand terribly. I did tell him to shut up a few times, but I was in seat 3 and he was in seat 8 otherwise I would of challenged him to HU4rollz, =). People like him are so bad for the game and create an unfriendly atmosphere for weaker players. I think it’s important to put players like this in line. This post seems to hold a lot more merit for live poker players. No reason to educate the fish or be a complete jackass.

I was too stupid to realise what he was talking to me about, but nontheless, I think it was definitely hugely +EV to be nice to these guys.

All of that experience made me especially realise that when these guys are purely recreational players, and the money is either not theirs, or not of any concern to them, theres no reason to not to try as be as polite, friendly and entertaining as possible.

This is also forgetting that for me anyway, it's much more enjoyable to be having a good time myself, and having a good time involves being friendly rather than being involved in **** talking, arguing, and generally being hostile.

I feel much better about myself, and walk away a lot happier from any social interaction when the people around me, and myself, are happy. Less stress, less discomfort, and more happiness, even if it had to sacrifice some tiny $EV edge, would be worth it in my book.
I enjoy life so much more when everyone around me is friendly and having a good time, and nowhere is this more applicable than at the poker table. I have to assume that most fish feel the same way. So in a friendly game with good-natured banter, I have a better time and probably win more, too.

On the other hand I don't understand why people decide to become such jerks when they're behind a computer screen, but it seems to happen a ton. I suppose not everybody thinks about life the way I do. I guess the smart move is to behave in whatever manner is most likely to keep the fish around, and that might sometimes involve some verbal prodding or even berating. But hopefully the friendly way is usually the best way.

i'm guilty(est) of this, so i believe i'm qualified to post about it.

we all (most of you reading this) have more money than we should (okay, that's relative), and more money than almost everyone that is our age. once you get your first ten thousand, you look aat everyone that you see and you think "this sucker is going to work all summer for three thousand dollars, and i made three times that sitting at my computer!". then, you get your first one hundred thousand, and you start to look at business men and people's parents and think, "i made as much in a few months as they did all of last year, and i'm still in school!" then you get your first million and you say, (i'll let you know in a few months).

the point being, you think you're invincible, better than everyone you meet. sure, some of you are very humble, or have been humbled in one way or another- but the vast majority of "us" had 'i'myoungandrichandwillneverdieandballoutofcontrol forever" syndrome.

what we fail to remember (or rather, are ignorant of, or have to be reminded of, or something) is that there are bigger fish in the pond. we might be the cool kid on the block, but then we meet someone like Guy Liabrete ([sic]+apologize if it's butchered) who enjoys playing poker. the guy is not bragging about his sick bmw or rolex, he's busy building a 30 car garage for his mid-60s muscle car collection and deciding whether or not he wants to allow someone to do a major motion picture on his life. he's given as much money as you're worth to charity 20 times over.

and he has chosen to play poker with you, which is your forte. he doesn't ever have to know that he's an underdog. are you not thankful? if a businessman asked you to be CEO for a day, you think you'd make mistakes? i've spent a lot of my poker career playing in games where my EV was relatively unknown, but i sat anyways. i didn't care. i wanted to play, i wanted a shot, i wanted to make a hero call. i think there is a part in rounders to this effect, and if there isn't, there should be.

my point is amongst the clutter that there are always bigger fish to fry; there is always someone to make you look meager (unless you're bill gates or tiger woods maybe) but almost none of us have met this, relatively speaking.

Well said, it's pretty ridiculous that some people are so good at poker and dumb enough to have so little grasp on this. I also think it's ridiculous for Viffer to make this post and say "do as I say not as I do", because even though the point is good it would be made more effectivley by someone who led by example.

kinda mildly OT:

fwiw, I think losing a buyin to you at 10/20 limit on Cake the month it opened up was the best thing to ever happen to me in poker.

why? because while I was doing that and checking out the cool gold cards and stuff, I was idly browsing through the tournament lobby for the hell of it and saw a particular tournament, after which my eyes glazed over and I immediately shut up for the next four months.

it was possibly the only poker knowledge-related topic that I've ever kept quiet about in my life and it was well worth it, imo.

btw I still wonder how the hell 2+2 didn't find out about that.

By most accounts, you are an annoying fool in live games as well, so be quiet and let this point be made by someone who has enough integrity for the words to not ring hollow. I'll be in Vegas this summer, and if I see you with your ******ed jersey on, I'll be sure to introduce myself to you so you can reply.
i've never played with viffer online, but i've played in live games with him many, many times. he can be an ass, he is often antagonistic, but i want to say that i have NEVER heard him whine after a bad beat.

it's rather bizarre: if he sucks out on you, he'll tell you how bad you are and talk mad *****, but if it's the other way around and HE gets sucked out on--no matter how brutally--he won't complain about it one bit. at least i've never seen it.

just wanted to be fair here and point out that viffer takes his beats like a man.

its actually a thin line, you don't want to be too friendly with the fish to the point that they don't want to play hard vs you and are content to soft play when in heads up pots with you.

i had a situation where we were playing 4 handed 50/100 and there was uber mega rich fish in the game.
we were super deep and i was stuck, but i was being nice to the kid (he was mid 20's) and we get HU in a raised pot.
i have 66 and call his raise OOP.
flop is T66.
i check he chks.
turn is some brick i bet he calls.
river is another brick i lead for pot (keep in mind we are like 40Kish deep and this guy has been just donking off massive amounts of money with like 2nd pair) and the dude looks at me and says "you know what bro, you're stuck and i like you and since you've been so nice ima do you a favor....i just call"
as he tables TT.

i've never been on such raging tilt from winning a pot in my life.
and no joke he proceeded to lose his 40K stack 3 hands later with AQ on a Qxx board in an unraised pot................,
